“Fabulous ice cream!”
Reviewed July 31, 2013

The ice cream kiosk sells fabulous ice cream, the restaurant is good but overpriced (in my opinion) with slow service.

“Seriously gone downhill”
Reviewed July 29, 2013

Visited this cafe twice in one week five years ago when on holiday. The crab sandwiches were legendary and we fondly remembered the experience.
So when we found ourselves passing by Aberaeron yesterday, we could not resist going back. Like so many places, ownership had changed hands three years ago and not for the better.
The service was icy at best and totally unaccommodating. The waitress glowered at us and seemed to be discussing us with colleagues behind the counter. When we tried to engage another waitress, she was unfriendly too.
The crab sandwiches are now two pieces of dry brown bread with a very small amount of brown crab meat and a bit of watercress. All for £7!!!!!!
Just to round off, the toilet seat was broken and the door did not lock.

All I can say is what a terrible shame. Quality down, prices up, service just terrible. Won't ever be back.

“Great Location, Attached to a fishmongers - Perfect!”
Reviewed July 27, 2013

If you are looking for seafood the this is the place to come in Aberaeron. Eating crabs claws and prawns in the sunshine overlooking the harbour was just lovely. The staff were great - what a lovely evening. Thank you.

“How can they miss an open goal”
Reviewed July 22, 2013

The Hive has it all going for it - brilliant town, great harbour side location, cool interior décor, even a fresh "day boat" fish shop in the same courtyard, all singing good quality place it has the lot going for it You walk in and think "this should be good".

Then it goes downhill - the menu is simply atrocious basically meant for the day tripper set - which is understandable during the day but in the evening it could be so much more - The main reason I chose it because being next to the fish shop and having Lobster on the menu one had great expectations of an excellent meal cooked by someone who knew their trade.

So I ordered Lobster – First problem it comes one way - steamed and cold. It is offered with one sauce which from the description offered was a crappy Marie Rose [mayo and Tomato ketchup type] with added [unspecified spices]. Fries and some leaves of dubious parentage. When it arrived the chef had not even bothered to cut the carapace to expose the meat - chef basic training 101. The fries were of the frozen variety all in all a complete waste of a lobster’s life
When you are paying £25 for a treat you want a choice - there are scores of great ways to cook lobster freshly. It does not take great skill to cook them well, simply with a hollandaise, or ala Cardinal, maybe Thermidore style I can easily think of about 50 different classic recipes

Come on Hive raise your game - take on the Harbour Master hotel down the road you have everything you need except a chef with a creative spark.

“Laid Back and Delish!”
Reviewed July 21, 2013 via mobile

Had dinner there with my family two nights in a row. Atmosphere is open and comfortable, food was really good, honey ice cream was excellent! Waiters/waitresses could have been a bit more attentive, but seemed really young (maybe tips aren't a big deal there?).
