Comfortable village pub with a really good selection of real ales but the food lets it down. Sometimes it's almost bad sometimes good. The last time we went we ordered fish. We waited half an hour before the staff informed us that the fish was no longer available. Surely we should have been told that within minutes of the order going into the kitchen? I then ordered a simple quiche and salad but we waited another 45 minutes for that to arrive. I could have gone home and cooked the whole thing in the time we were waiting. We counted 7 orders in front of ours and that isn't considered busy in my book. When the food arrived the quiche was good although underseasoned considerably. I rarely use salt on my food but this needed it. Soft pastry was lovely and the filling nice and deep. The biggest problem is the chef only seems to cook one meal at a time which means even on a slow session you still have to wait for such a long time. The apologies were far from sincere and the landlord really didn't seem bothered about our complaint or comment. We haven't been back since and as we have a holiday cottage in the area I'm afraid it's not a place we recommend to our guests either. Such a shame as when the fire is lit in winter it's a really cosy place to visit for a good pint of beer.

After walking for several miles in the hills above, the Royal Oak was my lunch break destination, 29 July 2012, 13:00 hrs.
Accepted host's suggestion of Sunday Lamb Roast.
Sorry to say it was not the best, I expected fresh cooked Sunday Roast, oops.
I received twice cooked roast potato, ( oven then later perhaps mico-wave ? ) with carbonized , chewy edges, inside soggy with fat.
Some purple-ish gellified strips may once have been red cabbage, not sure on that one.
Peas ( very small ) in a green gloop.
The so called Yorkshire pud, was quite rubbery and without any crispness.
Sorry Royal Oak this is just not good enough. Ate just over half and walked.

Excellent local pub in the country roads north of Llandovery.

Visited on a mid-week evening just after opening for a meal and at that time incredibly busy with only a couple of tables left.

Good local beers and excellent food- incredibly good value for money. Pub operates a small menu with some dishes changing in season. Goats Cheese and Red Onion tart, Salad and Chips possibly one of the best pub meals we've had in a long time.

Well worth the drive out. RSPB reserve just 3 miles north of the village. Would recommend booking- the pub website provides details of menus etc
