Lots of local food on the menu, great tasting confit lamb and rump steak, local cheeses (not sure of the names) all added up to a super meal. Helpful staff who let us try both wine and beer before making a decision on what to order was a major bonus.

We visited early on Saturday evening and were seated promptly in the bar area. The place was empty and felt a little lifeless.
The steak and duck were well presented and tasty and the service we received from the (new manager??) was superb. However the service we received from the northern lady was appalling!
She loudly announced that she was "off to buy fags" then returned to take our coffee desserts order stinking of smoke!
When she did bring the coffee over the milk was burnt, the cups were empty and there were no biscuits as advertised?? We asked her and she snarled at us that she would check with the chef... (For a biscuit??!!) She them preceded to slam 2 biscuits down on our table and storm off.
What a shame!
We shan't be returning and judging by the emptiness of the place neither are others.

We are local and thought we'd try out the newly restored Castle. My husband had the steak which was a little chewy and I had the fish which was ok. I am not a big eater and usually have one or two courses but the fish portion was so small I could have eaten two of them, and at almost £18 I thought it was quite expensive. There weren't many vegetables on the plate and we could have ordered extra but thought they should come with the meal. We can definitely cook better at home for much less money and not much time. Our dishes were not complicated. The restaurant was quiet at the time but the service was not very quick. The decor is fresh but it isn't the type of restaurant where you would want to go for a meal and sit with a good brandy and relax after eating. It's more like an up market pub/bistro. I'm happy to pay for good food but there is better food for less money in the area and we haven't been back since.

I love this place. I've been in sometimes for just a meal but also stayed a couple of times and the staff are marvellous and the food really tasty- great balance between being creative with local ingredients but also being simple enough to be exactly what you need after a long journey or long day. Staff who remember your name even though they haven't seen you for 6 months, ...really, really good without ever being in danger of disappearing up its own...well you know.

We stayed 3 nights (not at the Castle) in Llandovery and had dinner at the historic Castle Hotel for two of them. This is definitely not your local pub when it comes to eating. Apart from loads of charm and history and a great atmosphere, the Castle serves a wonderful selection of freshly prepared local produce and has an excellent blackboard seafood menu. This is accompanied by a small but very good wine list. We chose to eat in the bar but there is also a separate dining area. The staff were very kind and helpful the service was very good and the meals and wine very reasonably priced. All in all a most enjoyable experience.
