“Excellent value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 29, 2007

Since we had a family member in the hospital across the street, we stayed at the Holiday inn for 10 days. We have stayed before when it was a Hampton Inn.

The Holiday Inn is a great value. They have a low "hospital" rate of $79 per night. The hotel is clean, quiet and the beds & pillows are very comfortable. The free breakfast is adequate, especially considering the low price of the rooms. The staff was friendly & helpful, they have free internet access in the lobby and a decent fitness room.

The location is good, right across the street from the hospital and just a short drive to either downtown or midtown. The neighborhood isn't the best, I wouldn't go wandering at night, but it doesn't have a downright dangerous feel to it either.

Spent 4 nights from 30th September 2007 and pleased that I did. Typical HI Express for the States (better standard than HI Express in UK). Efficient registration, given up grade without asking as priority club member. Rooms comfortable and clean. Breakfast nothing special but hot drinks on offer 24 hours and always complimentary snack available in the evening. Just what you want when you come in at night. Just off Interstate and on main bus route. If you want to get downtown though suggest you use trolly bus. 5 minutes walk from hotel and great value at $1. By intersection to get down to Graceland (10 minutes) and 2 minutes from Sun Studios.

I was in Memphis for a one day conference and chose this hotel because 1) close porximity to the conference center 2) it had good reviews from other users and 3) the other conference hotels were sold-out. Although the hotel is clean and the front-desk personnel are decent, there is no full-time, on-duty general manager. I have never heard of that!
On to the good stuff. Upon arrival to our room, we were greeted by a couple having a fight in the hallway (12:15AM) We arrived super late at the property and I was looking forward to a solid 5 hours sleep before our wakeup call. No need for a wakeup call here! At 4AM I was awakened by a young couple (different from the first) TRYING TO OPEN MY DOOR with a handful of different card-keys!!! As my door was securely locked, they then proceeded to the two doors across the hall - then who knows what. Unfortunately I did not call the police as I was trying to eek out one more hour of sleep before my 6AM wakeup call. When I reported this to the front desk, they were not very interested.
Do I really need to comment on the next night?????????

My fiance and I just returned from a two night stay here for the Liberty Bowl. The location is not bad. Very close to hospital. About a 3 minute ($8) cab ride to Beale St. Our room was clean but the hotel itself seemed to be undergoing upgrades. The wallpaper was peeling in the hallways and the guest room doors did not have numbers- the number was written on a piece of tape. The front desk guy said the upgrades would be finished within a month. We were not affected by this other than the looks of the hotel (no construction noise or anything). My fiance thought the bed was below par for a Hampton (he's a Hilton Diamond member) and he also thought the bathroom could have been cleaner. While it was below average for most Hampton Inns, it was a great deal ($99/nite) for its proximity to the Liberty Bowl Stadium and Beale St.

  • Liked — The staff let us check in an hour early & it was close to the staduim & Beale St
  • Disliked — It's in the middle of upgrades
  • Tips/Secrets — Take a cab to Beale St to avoid parking hassles!

I was disappointed by the hotel. The room is very small and cramped and while it may be clean, it doesn't feel clean. The grout in the bathroom has some mold in it and also doesn't feel clean. While I was checking in, a man came in asking about the rate to stay at the hotel and how much cash he would need to "bring" -- then he said he'd have to go across the street and talk to his wife and asked to buy an apple. The desk clerk said no and looked at him very suspiciously. The entire interaction made me nervous and want to move to a different hotel (but it is late and I am here for only one night). Usually Hampton Inns are newish and clean and modern -- this is not that way.
I will say, however, that the A/C works very well and the bed is comfortable.

Stayed one night without any problems. Rooms typical of a Hampton Inn, what i expected for $99. Hotel was at capacity, no issues with the parking. As a former Memphis resident I can understand peoples comments about the area, but the area is actually improved since I lived there 8 years ago. Parking lot is well lit and fenced, but not gated. Access to hotel from rear requires room key. Arrived after 11 pm and felt safe. Outdoor pool was clean, breakfast had a good variety and was kept stocked. Would stay again if i needed to be in the midtown/UT area. Restaurant recommendation: Blue Fish on South Cooper@ Young, less than 10 minutes away, great seafood which is hard to find in memphis, $20 price range for entrees, highly recommeded. They provide parking 2 doors down on Cooper for $5 (parking can be difficult in Cooper-Young area), get your ticket validated by your server and the attendent will refund your $5 on the way out. Lots of fun little shops in the area also.
