“Fancy yet quaint. Fabulous room. Gourmet food. Friendly service”
Reviewed December 28, 2009

At the last minute, we decided to stay in a warm hotel instead of a cold RV park on Christmas Eve. I called the River Inn of Harbor town at about 2PM on Christmas Eve to see if they had any rooms left, and at what rate. The attendant who I spoke with was very polite and helpful. He described the various size rooms, and rates, and suggested that we "look before we buy" so to speak, since they had several rooms left for the evening. I liked that advice. Upon arriving at the hotel at 5PM, we were immediately impressed with the hotel. The lobby welcomed us with cookies, hot beverages, a lit fireplace, several cozy chairs and a free glass of wine. The front desk attendant was not the same person I had spoke to earlier in the day. And frankly, he was not as helpful. Still, I recalled enough about the room options to ask some specific questions. And, I learned the rates had gone down (perhaps, the offer a fire sale at the end of the day for stays that night?). It was about 20 cheaper than I had been quoted over the phone. The hotel staff were all very friendly and helpful. And, thankfully, the fine dining restaurant was open on Christmas eve and Christmas day. Currents (that's the restaurant) had wonderful food, at a high price (as expected). We ordered room service for the toddlers. I have to say, they offered the best "kids meal" I have ever encountered. Pan fried chicken, fancy mashed potatoes, fancy house made mac-n-cheese, and fresh green beans that were seared/sauted just before serving. The toddlers loved it, and so did us parents. The adult dinner at Current was over $120 for two of us (included 2 glasses of wine and 1 glass of beer). Overall, a great place to stay if you're looking for an upscale outing, with a close to home feel. Charming. I highly recommend it.

I could go on and on about this place!!! I have stayed at Ritz Carltons, several 4 and 5 star properties and this had to be at the top of the list. The room was sooooo clean. Like cleaner than my house :) Everything was fresh and well maintained. The furniture and decor in the rooms was also very nice. They had robes for you to enjoy in the rooms, a refrigerator and a DVD player with flat screen TV.

We had the least expensive room. It was kind of tight, but for the two of us it was fine. No way we could have done that with the kids! It is a boutique hotel, so there was no grand lobby like you would find at the Peabody, but I loved that. It was filled with a nice sized seating area around a fire. They had hot cider and cookies out for you to have. We don't drink but they have wine or champange available at check in for you and they offer wine with turn down service at night. Along with some chocolate truffles!! Our floor had a little reading nook with 200 or so books and coffee service in this little area.

The shower was great and there was an extra deep tub. Our room overlooked the river so that was nice. Parking was free and the neighborhood was nice and quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of Beale Street. There was a long path along the river so no excuse for morning exercise!! There was a nice gourmet grocery in the neighborhood that had some excellent food as well.

The only thing is that the walls are thin. We could here the plumbing from the adjacent rooms and it was pretty loud. We could also hear muffled conversations from our neighbors. But it did not ruin anything. We had reservations at Currents but decided to do room service instead. It was good food!! Breakfast is included as well as gratuities in your room rate. It was a real breakfast too. We had coffee, juice, cereal, pastries, eggs, bacon pancakes etc. You got a choice of like a starter-oatmeal, special K, fresh fruit, yogurt. Then you could choose a entree-like eggs/potatoes, pancakes, french toast...the dining room is very elegant. This place just did not cut any corners. The price was less than Peabody and the Madison Hotels and we got so much more.

Service was excellent. Ask for Patrick at dinner/breakfast-but service in town.

To quote another reviewer, this is the ONLY place to stay in Memphis. The feel of a B&B with all of the amenities of a larger hotel property.

My husband and I felt well received and catered to for our 4 night stay. Patrick, in the Currents dining room is as exceptional as other reviewers claim. The front desk staff is hit and miss, but the service levels in the other areas make up for the lack of polish of some of the front desk staff. They aren't bad, just lacking the polish one would expect for $300/night in MEMPHIS.

I would strongly recommend this hotel for someone wanting the peace and quiet of an upscale neighborhood, and the amenities of the Peabody Hotel ( a ZOO, BTW - people EVERYWHERE!). The quality of hard and soft furnishings was very good (nothing shabby in its chic). The Inn and its environment are in excellent repair.

TIP: Ask for a space in the main building to avoid the sounds associated with the TUGS restaurant in the aux. bldg.

This was a strange experience for my partner and i,we found the the staff at front desk very friendly but the atmoshpere just a little awkward and felt a little uncomfortable at times, the hotel is on kind of a complex with residential apartments/homes,shops etc,.and had a business like feel to it.
It is a very nice hotel however, very clean, and next to the river, its a good location if you have a rental car,but there is a downtown trolley which is 10 min walk over the bridge,if your feeling energetic, this takes you right into Beale Street and downtown Memphis.
We found the room clean and the bathroom ok,the view was of the river but over a flat roof and road.
After a long journey we decided to eat in the Tuggs bar below our room,it was a great night, the food was lovely and the waitress and staff were very friendly and let me sample a few of the beers,so by 9pm we both were a little tired from our trip and decided on an early night, unfortunately the couple next door to us had something different on their minds, which is fine by me as long as i cant hear them, but we could and my partner and i had to lay there and listen to them for the next hour, there was also someone stomping around in the room above,i would say the walls/floor are not properly sound insulated, which if you are seasoned travellers like my partner and i this is a must.
The following morning i approached the hotel manager and kindly requested a top floor room if one was availlable, but was told that the hotel was full, however,i was then informed i could have the Penthouse suite for an extra $180 which i declined, they did inform us that the lucky chap and his missus making all the noise were checking out that day so my partner and i chanced it,we did have a very quite and lovely nights sleep and i'm positive the hotel was not fully booked that night as we would have heard someone in the room above,i'll let you come to your own conclusion on wether or not we were being sold the Penthouse suite for no reason other than getting extra $ out of us,i felt this let the hotel down in my opinion.
Ending on the plus side, the breakfast was superb and included and we loved Memphis and all it had to offer,i dont know if i would return to River Inn Harbour Town if we were in Memphis again.

We stayed here for two nights on a trip round the deep south and this was our favourite hotel. It was not cheap but worth it. It is in a lovely location as described in previous reviews. The resturant was excellent, as was the more informal 'Tuggs'. Service was very good, especially Patrick who was so enthusiatic and proud of the hotel. If I go to Memphis again I would splash out and stay here.

Only a couple of minor issues (they did not spoil the stay but management should note)....I agree with a previous comment that the reception was also the switchboard and we had trouble with the printer on the PC and reported this but it was not fixed the next day.

A fantastic hotel in a lovely location in Memphis. The hotel is located in an upscale neighbourhood 5 minutes north of downtown Memphis on the banks of the Mississippi. Ample parking is available on street outside the hotel. A short cab ride gets you to Beale Street and restaurants downtown.

The hotel is a boutique style Inn and is personal and intimate. The decor is first class as are the rooms. The beds and the bed linens are amoung the finest we have experienced in any hotel. Staff were courtious, friendly and efficient.

We opted to have dinner at the hotel restaurant, Currents. Incredible food and again the service and staff were second to none. Breakfast was equally as good.

A great place to stay if visiting Memphis.

We had a great stay at this hotel. The location is actually better than I thought as the little Mud Island neighborhood that has been built here is really attractive and well-thought-out.

The hotel consists of two buildings, both with elevator and rooms with views of the river. The rooms were fairly roomy and the beds were comfortable, if a bit high off of the ground. We booked four rooms: three large rooms with king sized beds and a suite. The rooms were fairly roomy, with a small seating area and nice bathrooms. The suite was larger with a nice sofa and a couple of lounge chairs.

I never got a firm handle on how formal or informal the place is. This being the South, it could go either way. I could tell that the hotel was trying to keep things fairly upmarket, but in the "boutique" space, one must accommodate a certain degree of casual behavior, and this duality showed and was a bit awkward. The service for breakfast on the one day we actually went was uneven, but the restaurant manager was apologetic and explained that he was short-staffed that day and took good care of us (he was waiting all the tables himself) even if it took a long time.

The hotel manager was friendly and just the right amount of involved with our stay (not too overbearing or aloof). The housekeeping staff was incredibly friendly. The front desk staff -- especially Shannon -- were amazing: friendly, competent and helpful. My only complaint with the service is that the hotel seems to rely on the front desk staff to field all of the calls, so almost any time one needed the front desk, one was interrupting them or waiting for them to, basically, never stop talking on the phone. I guess a switchboard/operator or a second on-duty front desk person, which was evident sometimes, would be the solution.

We loved walking around the little neighborhood and found the deli/grocery spot Miss Cordelia's to be one of the finest of its sort. We wished we had something like it near our own home.
