We (a family of 4 including 2 teenagers) stayed 2 nights at the River Inn in early January 2013. The hotel is situated on Mud Island at the edge of a new residential area (upmarket condos). On arrival we were greeted warmly and offered a glass of champagne which was nice. Our rooms were on the 2nd floor of the building across the road. Both had a large bed - in one of the rooms this was separated into two single beds for our teenagers. The rooms were large and nicely furnished with a view over the river in the distance. Each evening there was a turn-down service with chocolates and port (a nice touch). There was also a small library-style area on the floor with books available to borrow; a flask of coffee was set out here early each morning so you could grab a cup before breakfast. Breakfast was included in our rate and was served in the restaurant in the main building. A full sit-down breakfast was offered - portions were reasonable and the food freshly prepared and of good quality; though service could be a bit erratic (on the first morning I think we got a new server who took a long time, and whilst very pleasant, probably didn't seem to know what he was doing; it was better on the second morning). The hotel is situated about 2 miles from the main downtown area (e.g. Beale Street) and whilst you can walk it during the daytime (which we did on a rather wet and cold Sunday morning), it is not recommended at night as you pass through some rather quiet and derelict areas near the convention centre and around the Pyramid. However driving into the centre of town is not an issue as there are a multitude of car parks dotted around. The hotel does not appear to have a car park - parking is either at the kerbside beside or in front of the hotel; though there is also a large residential parking area that you can use - we had no problem finding parking. Aside from Paulettes restaurant there is also a casual dining bar-style restaurant (Tugs) on site which was quite nice. Nearby there is a small row of shops with a nice upmarket deli (Miss Cordelia's). The reception staff were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. Overall a very nice hotel, with some nice touches such as the champagne and port, and a good base from which to explore Memphis.

We did choose this hotel because of the tripadvisor reviews, and it was a good call.

We arrived on the late side, having been driving for a few hours and the front desk was very friendly at check in and offered us a glass of wine. This was perfect to decompress as we relaxed in our room (the local bars and restaurants were closing when we arrived).

The River Inn pays a lot of attention to detail. There were common areas with comfy chairs and books. In the lobby there was a welcoming area to relax.

The room was elegant and there was chocolates, and a glass of port waiting for us. The bed was beautiful and cozy. The view of the Mississippi river outside our window was soothing to watch.

In the morning, there was a complementary breakfast in their restaurant. Not a little continental breakfast, but a full, regular menu breakfast. The grapefruit juice was freshly squeezed. The food, prepared to order.

Finding inviting and comfortable places to stay makes travel such a better experience, and this place does not disappoint.

I can't add anything more to the already excellent reviews of this hotel. We had a lovely room looking on to the Mississippi (tucked away from the city which created a sense of safety) but the best thing about this hotel - and a quality that is very difficult to create/replicate - was the ambiance which flowed from the exceptional hospitality. The staff were friendly and you genuinely felt they cared about providing excellent customer service. The breakfasts were good. We thought the evening meal offer to be a little rich for our taste buds but we were getting over a bout of flu so we craved simple food. You can't go wrong by staying here and would definitely return.

Room Tip: Take one overlooking the Mississippi

Who knew there was such a warm, safe, and quaint community in Memphis???  The River Inn of Harbor Town, and Harbor Town as a whole, provided the backdrop for a wonderful, romantic weekend getaway for my friend and me!

The hotel staff, from Katherine who provided sincere and friendly check-in service, to the room service delivery by Jessica from TUG’S, our stay couldn’t have been more perfect.

The rooms were large and welcoming, with the most comfortable 4 post bed that I’ve experienced.  The bathroom was large and clean, the housekeeping staff was on the ball, and the breakfast presented by Paulette’swas delicious.

The area was safe to walk, with an excellent coffee shop, Café Eclectic, just down the street.  The river front area provided beautiful views of the Mississippi River Bridge lit up at night, a small independent grocer & deli, Miss Cordelia’s, supplied us with last minute items, and we dined at TUG’S, a casual restaurant attached to the Inn, and found some of the best Southwestern Egg Rolls we have ever tasted!!!

We will not hesitate to recommend this B&B to our friends and family, and there is no doubt we will stay here again the next time we visit Memphis.

Quaint and luxurious right on the river. The room was exquisite, the linens divine and the hospitality warm and inviting. With a complimentary full breakfast include and our waiter Mr. Patrick's affable southern charm, I highly recommend The River Inn on The Harbor for your stay in Memphis. Now we are off the Graceland.

Nice hotels are hard to come by in Memphis these days. Sure, you have the South's (formerly) Grand Hotel, The Peabody, which was overrun by undesirable years ago. You have a very few other notables such as the Madison or Westin, although these can bring an undesirable crowd as well.

Then we come to River Inn at Harbor Town. Tucked away in sleepy Harbor Town is a true gem! My parents had been talking about it for a couple of years. They drive 80 miles from North Mississippi frequently on weekends to stay here and eat at Paulette's (a Memphis institution).

We went up to celebrate their anniversary two days after Christmas and I instantly fell in love with this charming Southern inn. Their general manager is German and obviously runs a tight ship. He is very visible throughout the property and it shows (well, there were a few slip-ups to be discussed later).

Notable standouts are the complimentary glass of wine upon check-in, and the nightly turndown service featuring port wine and a truffle. I was unimpressed by the Lindor truffles. I expected something from Dinstuhl's of Memphis or some other non-commercial chocolate, but they are definitely on track with this offering.

Rooms are very nicely appointed with classic southern furnishings and VERY nice lamps. Each room is slightly different.

Where I found the property to be falling apart was in the bathroom. The soap dishes were coming un-mounted from the tile in the shower and my toilet had a leak. The funny thing is that the turn-down attendant obviously noticed the leak and placed a towel behind the toilet to catch the dripping water. I would have not expected such a tacky remedy for this issue. I didn't want to re-pack and move, so I just let it be for the night.

Paulette's new home is inside River Inn, and the food is as wonderful as I remember it being. One fail, however was the escargot. Served in mushroom caps and not nearly as hot as they should have been, they were a big disappointment. Otherwise, the food was great. Our waiter tried WAY too hard to be funny, but overall it was a pleasant evening.

One of the best amenities here is the complimentary breakfast, served in Paulette's every morning. This is no run of the mill hotel breakfast. A full cooked to order meal is more than ample to get the day started.

Overall, a great property. They do need to stay on top of things falling apart in rooms, however.

Room Tip: River view rooms are available.
