My wife and I visit Memphis on business. We love to drive around Mud Island for the view and the beautiful homes. We didn't realize there was a hotel on the island, but luckily Trip Advisor knew. We couldn't have been more pleased with the location, hotel, Paulette's, staff, beds, view, safety, on and on.Free parking around the hotel, complete breakfast with excellent service, piano in the lobby, roof top terrace. Loved every minute. Hated to leave.

Room Tip: Some rooms have a guaranteed river view.

The accomodations were very nice but what made since a lasting impression on my husband and me were the people. From the person at the desk to the person waiting tables at breakfast, they enjoyed what they did and they wanted you to do the same. Patrick at the restaurant was amazing and it started our day off with a great feeling. The breakfast was wonderful. We will return whenever we have a chance and I hope everyone that wants a beautiful setting on the Mississippi River will do the same.

We were very pleased with this place. It is beautiful! The river flows by the park across the street. The breakfast was delicious! The room is very nice! We reccomend this place very highly! It was so nice to walk the trail by the river after a nice dinner.

I booked this hotel based on the tripadvisor reviews. I had read a couple of negative reviews about the cleanliness of the hotel, but decided to disregard them since the majority of guests seemed to be happy with the hotel and it is ranked high on this website (which I use all the time for all my trips by the way, I have been using this website for many years).

This hotel was not clean. When we arrived, my friend and I went to the room we were given. The prior guest's glass of wine (or whatever it is they were serving at the hotel) was still on the table...his receipt was there as well. The bed looked half made and it just wasn't ready. The gentleman at the front desk apologized and tried his hardest to make things right so with his manager's approval moved us to a suite. We thought that was very nice and at the time were very happy. However, when we arrived in the suite it was dirty too. The rugs had stains in them (looked like there had been several parties in the room). There was so much dust and dirt in the hall along the walls...the cabinet, which held a few glass items, had a broken sculpture of some sort laying in it...the soap dish (plastic by the way) was chipped and cracked. Needless to say, this was not a top-rated hotel by any means and I have stayed mostly in top-rated hotels everywhere I go. This was average at best.

I asked to speak to the hotel's general manager and when I did (and brought him up to the room so he could see all this for himself), he never actually apologized. He told me that this suite had not been ready at the time it was given to us. So why would they give it to us??? He did have housekeeping come to clean, but it was all a bit too late. By the way, the dust and dirt along the walls was had piled up for a long time, you could tell, it wasn't a one time not being cleaned deal, it was a "this hasn't been cleaned in weeks" deal.

By the way, if management is reading this please take my suggestions...clean your hallways in front of the elevators (they were dusty and dirty), remove the stains from your carpets and take pride in keeping this hotel as clean as possible...since most guests care about cleanliness when staying away from home, thank you.

The hotel's location is good...it's away from the downtown city noise and by the river which was nice.

We deeply regret and apologize for the unfortunate experience of these guest. The complaint primarily resulted from an isolated and rare instance of being too anxious to satisfy guests with a check-in before rooms were released by housekeeping. Since then we have amended our procedures to avoid these and other items mentioned from reoccuring. We are dedicated to excellence and deserving the exemplary TripAdvisor reviews which we customarily receive.

Classic European (everything except the coffee cups which are big American style), awesome restaurant adjacent, incredible service (all the staff are in crisp black and white uniforms), a nightly turn-down service (polite, uniformed young woman comes to your door with a decanter of wine and a chocolate to leave for you after she turns down your bed), solid wood furniture, beautiful art, incredibly talented pianists every night at the piano bar in the lobby, a view overlooking the mighty Mississippi, the greenway riverwalk, the HarborTown neighborhood also to walk in, a fantastic deli on the corner, a walk's distance to the trolley that takes you downtown...four poster solid wood kingsize bed, very comfy mattress, expensive linens...and all for the price of the downtown Mariott hotel.

Room Tip: Rooms with a riverside view are really divine.

We are 50 something seasoned world travelers who are used to the best of the best. This hotel greatly exceeded my highest of expectations. From the manager who is hands on seemimgly all day and night...to the well trained and extremely attentive polite staff. This is a 5 start diamond worth your serious consideration. Our only regret is that we did not stay longer! The hotel is close to downtown however you need a car to get around. Free parking behind the hotel is safe and convenient.

Room Tip: The rooms overlooking the Mississippi are fantastic!

We arrived at the hotel very early in the morning (6.45am) having travelled to Memphis on the Amtrak train from Chicago. We thought that we would have to just leave our bags at the desk and check in later in the afternoon. Not so. We were warmly greeted by the girl on reception, upgraded to a suite and told that we could check in straight away. When we had sorted our bags and had a shower we were treated to a gourmet breakfast in the Inn's dining room. The breakfast was superb.
We were only staying for 2 nights but wish we could have stayed longer. The helpful and attentive staff at the hotel made our stay so enjoyable. The rooms were comfortable and clean, the roof top terrace was a lovely place to have an early evening cocktail and watch the mighty Mississippi flowing by just across the road.
We found it very easy to walk from the hotel to the trolleybus stop at the bottom of Main Street. Takes about 10 minutes. We did that on a couple of occasions and took a cab back to the hotel after dark.
We travelled all over the US for 3 weeks during June 2012 and this hotel was a favourite. Friendly, comfortable and clean. A decanter of port and chocolates was a nice touch at 'turn down' in the evenings. We were even given a packed breakfast with coffee to take with us when we left for an early morning train departure to New Orleans.
Well done River Inn. An experience to remember and savour!

Room Tip: Ask for a second floor suite in the annexe. Quiet rooms with good views.
