This is going to sound like a nightmare, but read to the end. There IS a happy ending way down there, and that's a credit to The Capital Grille.
Made a last-minute reservation through a third-party site using some rewards we'd built up. The reservation service website, app, and email notifications (even afterward checking to see how we liked it) all gave the correct date. But, when we arrived the hostess couldn't find us. We gave our phone number associated with our reservation and were told that it showed us on the following week at the same time. Odd, since everything we had showed it was right. The disconnect could have been not their fault, but seem unlikely. They did seat us right away, though, with no waiting, on a Friday at 7PM!!
We ordered the 10 oz. Filet Mignon and 14 oz. Steak au Poivre (both medium) with sharable sides of the Lobster Mac-n-cheese (which is their "specialty") and Asparagus. Her filet came out almost well done, unacceptable. Our waiter saw it and nearly gasped and took it back to get another one, void of any form of apology. Meanwhile, the Lobster Mac was underwhelming with only a few small chunks of lobster in it. The asparagus was seasoned well, but it's really just asparagus. The au Poivre was heavier on the black peppercorns (also cracked courser) than I'm used to at other places. I wouldn't compare, though, because elsewhere it's a filet (my fav) and this was not. It was cooked to perfection. Chef Josh came out with another attempt at the filet and an actual apology, which was now quite rare, so he took it back for some finishing, accompanied by another apology. While we're waiting for the steak a woman approaches (manager?) and asked "Is there anything I can get you?" Note the lack of apology yet again, as well as any form of introduction as to who she was or acknowledgement that she even knew we were waiting for a corrected steak. We expressed that we were fine, since everything was ultimately being corrected to our liking. Chef Josh returns with a now perfectly cooked filet that would have been amazing had it been brought the first time. He expressed his apologies a third time and handed me his card, recommending I let him know on our next visit. He also expressed that everything from the kitchen was "on him" for our entire evening. We didn't complain about anything except for one improperly cooked filet that they showed a great interest in making right for us.
Then, they bring out a complementary dessert, since we were each celebrating new jobs that evening. Aside from the apology lapse - and maybe they just left that for the chefs as their custom? - the service was remarkable, even though we ordered water to drink. Our server was genuinely concerned over the steak not being right and taking care of us, including making a way to leave proper gratuity for a zeroed-out ticket.
We'll be back to not only use the reward we weren't able to use, but to reward the staff, and Chef Josh, for making everything ultimately turn out to be a memorable evening.
