“Enjoyed an unseasonably cool Friday night stroll last Friday night......”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 14, 2012

Twice this year I've lucked into an opportunity to enjoy this park during sudden cool snaps in an otherwise oppressive summer in Memphis. Both times now stand out as some really bright moments.

Last Friday night, hubby and I popped out for an impromptu 'date night'......dinner at our favorite new spot, Tug's on Mud Island, which really feels like some childhood dinners out in the French Quarter of the sixties, and then took a stroll down on the Riverfront in Tom Lee Park. I was surprised to see such a family vibe in the collection of other strollers, even after dark, as it was around 9-9:30 on a weekend night. Apparently, folks are finally using our gorgeous riverfront area for what it was intended......an urban oasis right on the waterfront of a busy city. An added bonus that night was a delicious breeze, and all in all it was a great, lo-cal 'dessert' after our meal. We saw families, couples, and even some singles, obviously neighborhood loft and apartment dwellers from the area's burgeoning young professional community, judging from the jogging gear, etc. A special Cudos to the Memphis Police Department, for making our downtown area such a priority in their vigilant efforts........they've sure paid off !! I was married outdoors, at the top of that big hill overlooking Riverside Drive, and it's great to be able to pop down there, even if it's just by myself with a frappacino sometimes, and enjoy the fresh air and the view. That wasn't always possible, and I give MPD complete credit for that, as they've put in the long, tireless effort to take our Riverfront for everybody again.

“Site of the Sunset Symphony”

Tom Lee Park is the site of many Memphis in May events including the sunset symphony. You can't get any closer to the river than this.

“Lovely park, lacking restrooms”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 1, 2012

This park has absolutely awesome sunsets. Free parking or take the trolley, walk or bike. The city should be ashamed of the bathroom building (ugly) and the fact that it is locked. I only remember one drinking fountain. You can wander from Tom Lee south to Martyrs Park (pass the big apartment buildings) and north to Ashburn-Coppock & the visitors center. You'll pass the paddleboat landing. Many photo opportunities. Watching a river barge is very relaxing.

Pets and kids welcome, there are a few benches. The different monuments to Tom Lee (then & now) really show how far Memphis has come. Evenings on the weekends there are some serious bling-bling cars and motorcycles which are worth a walk by. Well patrolled by police and popular with locals. Wikipedia has a good article on the park. With little effort it could be a much better park.

“So-so”

It's really just a semi-grassy expanse along the river. Nice location for watching the sunset over the river, and for big music festivals, but nothing special.
