Pho Binh is a bit off the beaten path and located in a rather unprepossessing strip mall, but midtown Memphians will tell you that it's one of the city's best places to go for lunch. The hot buffet always features a colorful selection of fresh Vietnamese style entrees (my personal favorite is the pineapple chicken), with no less than four entrees designed to cater to vegetarian customers and two hot soups (at least one of which is always vegetarian). The family-owned and staffed restaurant is friendly, welcoming, and frequented by a wildly diverse range of locals. Space can sometimes be an issue - the restaurant is very popular, and lunchtime can be crowded. Happily, the wait for a table is rarely long, and you may even be offered a seat at a table of regulars who are only too happy to include you in their group. Hoa Binh is a great place to catch up on what's happening in midtown, be caught up in the community's energy and diversity, and escape from the workplace for a bit, all while enjoying the fresh local ingredients in expertly prepared food. When you go to the counter to pay, be prepared to be shocked by how little you are charged in return for so much!
