John and the staff at McEwens didn't disappoint.
Great appetizers and entrees. Had the Red Fish Special and it was good. Shrimp and grits as appetizer delicious.

“Great choices”
Reviewed December 6, 2013

The food was very good, the service was pleasant and welcoming. We had a large group that ended up split because we had no reservation. We ended up downstairs in the cave, which was no problem at all, because it was a nice atmosphere with the group we had. The prices are steep, but the smaller portions are mere reasonable big enough for seniors and they are really delicious. The drinks were pricey. I would go there again, when in Memphis, but there is better value in Memphis.

“Just right”
Reviewed December 3, 2013

Ate here twice on a one-week Memphis trip. Great laid-back atmosphere: non-stuffy casual elegance. Creative, well-executed, southern-inspired comfort food and warm, caring service. Nice variety of small and larger plates. Highly recommend the pork tenderloin, shrimp-and-grits, and beef tenderloin gyros small plates, BLT wedge salad (which I requested chopped), and fabulous ribeye steak main course. Key lime pie was delicious. Full bar and a good variety of wines by the glass. Local artists' works hung (for sale) in dining room. Half-block from the Main Street tram line near the Peabody. Come as you are.

“Get there early”
Reviewed December 2, 2013

Had two meals here last month, while traveling back and forth through Memphis. Great food and service. Dining room was full and we did not have a reservation so we ate in the bar which was just fine. The dinner menu is great and we ordered off that the first night. The second night we ordered a bunch of items off the Small Plate menu. Highly recommended.

“A Memphis Winner!”
Reviewed November 3, 2013

It was a real revelation to find out that Memphis is more than barbecue and peanut butter and banana sandwiches. I clearly found a local foodie favorite in McEwen's. The place was packed at 6:15 pm on a Saturday night and I had no doubts that those tables would continue to be full all night. Since I was eating alone, I booked a high table in the bar area where I had a great view of the place, great service, and ate a great meal. The restaurant feels like an upscale, casual-chic, bistro/pub--the kind of place where you could stop in after work for a drink, meet good friends for dinner, or impress a date/inlaws. I was most impressed by the menu. Started with a Tasmanian sweet crab tostada that was seriously yummy. I kept on going with seafood with the tuna tartare (which was really a tuna tartare/beef tartare combo but the server graciously said no problem to all tuna for this non-meat eater). The wines by the glass were pretty limited but I found the Gnarly Zin for a ridiculously low price of $7 and Woodford Reserve bourbon for normal big-city prices. I usually don't eat dessert but couldn't resist the creme brûlée--which was excellent. I was staying down the street at the Madison so it was an easy and safe walk there and back. McEwen's is a real find in Memphis. But make sure you make reservation!!
