“Nice location - staff could be better”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 21, 2007

The best part of this hotel is the location - right downtown on the trolley line. The room was clean when we got there and the staff was friendly. We stayed for 3 nights and, unfortunately, had to nag housekeeping and the hotel staff to get the room cleaned. Towels/shampoo/soap were not replaced, even when housekeeping "remembered" that our room existed. No housekeeping came one day and came and only made the bed (with old linens) the next day. We had to find our own clean towels and toiletries. Otherwise a nice place to stay.

We stayed at the Residence Inn in downtown Memphis for a weekend getaway and a Grizzlies basketball game. Rates were lower than conventional upscale downtown hotels but included all the Residence Inn extras (a suite as opposed to a room, free internet, free breakfast, etc.).

The location is just a short walk from Beale Street and the rest of the downtown attractions. The hotel is in a restored historic building...not your typical Residence Inn setup. The lobby was very cool with retro, art deco stylings.

Check-in was a breeze and the staff was friendly. The room we had was an executive studio with a king bed partitioned off (with its own TV), and a sitting area with a sofa, chair, desk, and TV), and a kitchenette with a full-sized fridge, microwave, stove, and all the dishes and glasses.

The bed and bathroom was elevated on a platform a step above the rest of the room, which made the suite look larger. My only quibble with this was that it was a wooden platform that squeaked and creaked when you walked across it.

The room was clean and bed was comfortable.

On the roof of the hotel, there is a very nice hot tub and also a barbeque grill and picnic tables. The city view up there was outstanding.

The continental breakfast in the lobby was good but not great.

All in all, the value for the price and the location makes this hotel well worth staying at.

  • Liked — The location and the historic building
  • Disliked — The creaky floor on the bed platform

On Memorial Day Weekend 2007, we visited Memphis TN for the 3rd time and the Residence Inn Memphis Downtown for the 2nd time. The primary reasons for choosing this property was the spacious suites, full kitchen and the proximity to the entertainment offered at Peabody Place and Beale Street.

Positives: Friendly staff from the front desk to housekeeping; Spacious suites, 400 to 600 square feet, with full bathrooms, nearly full kitchens with a small stove top, dishes, glasses, cookware, metal utensils, full size refrigerator & microwave oven. There's also a sofa bed, desk, television and free internet in the living area. Yes, the bedroom has a television.
Contrary to previous reviews, this property is within 1 to two blocks walking radius to many shops, restaurants and convenience stores. So do some online research, make strategic phone calls and learn this progressing area of Memphis. In addition, check out the hotel's roof top for great views of downtown Memphis and the river front area.

Negatives: The friendly hotel staff has limited knowledge of the city because most of them do not live near downtown Memphis. Therefore, if you need information for places outside of downtown such as directions to the airport or across town dining options, feel free to ask the front desk management.
The breakfast buffet is very questionable in relation to cleanliness of space, quality of preparation and freshness of food items. So be very careful and consider having breakfast at the neighborhood cafes or dine at the more upscale Peabody Hotel.

Tips: The housekeeping staff perform their rounds between 0930 and 1500. So make sure that your room is available for cleaning between those times or inform the front desk staff about your housekeeping concerns.
If you need to self park, there are at least 4 parking decks near the hotel. However, the Residence Inn Memphis Downtown valets use a secured covered deck directly behind the property with a down stairs access to the deck inside the hotel lobby near the front desk.
Our dining choices in Memphis are the Flying Fish for lunch or dinner, Peabody Hotel for breakfast, Rendezvous for Memphis style dry rub barbeque pork or lamb ribs and Texas de Brazil Churrascaria for weekend brunch or dinner.

So hurry on down to Memphis for barbeque ribs and Beale Street fun.

  • Liked — The proximity to downtown entertainment.
  • Disliked — The valet parking and the breakfast buffet services need to reviewed by management.

This hotel was perfect for our stay. It was very clean and big. We had a great view on the rooftop of everything. I would stay here again. It was within walking distance to everything we wanted to see. The breakfast was very good. There were so many things to choose from. We used valet parking--they were quick to deliver our vehicle and very friendly. The front desk was super polite. I highly recommend this hotel!!!

Wonderful hotel. Staff was great and we received an excellent walkup rate. Suite style with everything you need. My daughter loved the free movie check out and DVD player in the room. Location is great. Easy walking distance to the Peabody and to Beale Street. Bedding was
great, as was the full breakfast the next morning. Would stay again in a heartbeat!

My family and I just got back from a four night stay at the Residence Inn Memphis Downtown. This has to be the best experience we've had at a hotel. From check-in to check-out, the staff were wonderful. We wanted to check in early and they didn't have a two bedroom suite ready which I had reserved in advance, so they gave us two one bedroom suites at a reduced rate. The valet parking is great, they get your car up front in minutes. The rooms were beautifully appointed and spacious. The breakfast buffet was ample. My husband and son enjoyed the pool table in the billard room. They have an on site workout room which was nice. The hotel is located near all the major attractions. The area was quiet, and we felt safe walking to the places we wanted to go. I would definitely stay there again.

  • Liked — The friendly and helpful staff.
  • Disliked — The minimal work out facility.
