“Overpriced”
Reviewed April 13, 2009

This place was way to expensive for what you got. There was not even a refrigerator in the room. Staff was not friendly. Internet was a pain.

We stayed at the holiday inn select at the begining of april ,the hotel was clean, beds comfy enough , central a few minutes walk from beale street. staff were the most helpful , but found staff in resturants really good for getting advise from . tips- the sun studio bus goes from the fedex forum building / rock and roll museum starting at 10:30 in the morning takes you between gracelands and sun studios we didn't vist both on same day and had no problems using the free service but both a definite to vist . Rock and roll museum interesting need about 11/2 to 2hrs to complete .Don't bother using any of the tour buses they are expensive and you can do most of it yourself. Trolley(trams) are about a block away from the hotel there are two types one takes you on a full loop(riverfront)and the other just goes up and down the street to the bus station , it costs $1 per trip. The riverfront trolley takes you to the boat trips , tourist information , civil rights museum(a definite one to vist) and the bus station (northen terminal) you can get on the trolley ask the driver for a bus transfer for $1-50 and use the bus for were ever you are going. We went to wofchase mall about an an hour on the bus for a $1-50 each way , would have cost $29 on the tour bus or $42 each way for a taxi. we were told that you can also get the bus to the zoo and other malls ,we took a taxi due to lack of time but they do rip you off ,cost us more going out than coming back and same with airport . try and book them over phone as it seem cheaper. The zoo was also worth a vist. Eating - hard rock cafe serviced a raw burger , tgi fridays was good , friendly staff, breakfast all you can eat for about $13 including coffee/juice . denny's ok , we were told huey's were good didn't go though. rendezvous was awful $15 for about five ribs a bit of coleslaw and some beans ,no fries . came out hungry .Memphis was really quite during the week and came alive at the weekends, pan handlers are a pain but just igore them and they leave you alone , give them money and they will remember you and come back looking for more .

We were booked in a King Executive room. We had a corner room with lots of windows and views of the downtown and a parking garage. The room was comfortable but missing some of the executive ammenities. I had to call 3 times over 2 days before I got the coffee maker missing from the room. We were missing the ice bucket and the complimentary robe. The bathroom was cramped and the shower curtain smelled musty. The staff at the front desk was reasonable but not really warm and friendly. The location is great.......just 3 blocks from Beale street. Overall it was an ok stay.....and the manager did make an adjustment to my bill for the missing room items. Don't bother with the breakfast buffet........overpriced and not very good. There are many much better places to eat within just a few blocks of the motel.

My wife and I recently spent New Year's weekend at the Holiday Inn Select in Memphis. First, let me just say that the hotel is not on Beale Street but is actually a few blocks from Beale Street. Not a big deal if you're young and healthy and enjoy a good walk (which we do) but it's worth knowing if you're not up to a five to ten minute walk every time you want to go to Beale. That said, it is very conveniently located to the baseball park. You can comfortably walk to the FedEx Forum and the river front as well.

The hotel itself is very nice. We had a corner room with a view of Union Street. A really nice room. We did have a hiccup at check-in. We got there at 3pm asking for an early check in. We were told the room was not ready yet and check in wasn't until 4pm. Fair enough. We said we'd go grab a drink down the road and be back to check in at 4pm. When we got back at 4:40pm there was a different person at the counter and she informed us that our room wasn't ready and it would be about a half hour while they got it ready.

Needless to say I was a bit upset and asked to speak with the manager. To make a long story short, Mr. Tabor, the General Manager, made things right with my wife and I and we left the hotel very pleased. Mistakes happen to all of us. The difference, in my opinion, between an average hotel and a great hotel is when the mistakes happen do they do the right thing and take care of the customer. Without question this hotel is customer service oriented and I would not hesitate to stay there again.

If you would like a simple review of "is the room comfortable and clean?" the answer is yes. Our room had modern decor with a king bed & oversize desk and dresser. The room was in nice condition.

On the bathroom is quite small. Two people cannot share that space. The walls in this hotel are paper thin and you will hear each and every drunk and/or sober person who comes back from Beale Street.

However, the front desk staff and management were extremely unprepared. We, along with thousands of others arrived for the Liberty Bowl-with reservations-and waited for hours to check in. Numerous people arrived starting around 3:00, and were turned away because check-in isn't until 4:00. We cannot argue that issue, since that is their policy. But at 4:00 they had one person checking EVERYONE in and at least 60 people in the lobby. This went on for 1/2 an hour while the crowd in the lobby grew in number and decreased in patience. They eventually added two more staff members, but check-in did not increase in speed.

We called the hotel manager, Barry, while standing in line and he was extremely rude and told us that we were mistaken and that people were being checked in very rapidly and that it takes 5 minutes to check in the average guest. We were a bit baffled to hear this from him since we were the ones standing in line watching the clerks take 12-14 minutes to check in a guest while Barry was somewhere in an office and not actually in the lobby. Once guests did receive their keys they were told that their rooms were not clean and that they could put their luggage in the room and return in an hour or so. For all the trouble they were causing they were giving a "free drink" voucher-the thought of that on New Year's Day was turning most everyone's stomach.

At this point, I called Holiday Inn Corporate. At this point, I had driven 6 hours and needed a nap before dinner, and a dirty room was not acceptable. By this time it was 5:30. Corporate office put me on hold and called Barry who checked us in from his office and came to the office to give us our room keys. However, by this point we were already at the front desk, waiting for the clerk to come back from having gone to check the rooms. He took us back and finished checking us in. He said, "I expedited your checking for you." To which I had to point out to him that I had been standing at the counter already for the past 15 minutes.

The problem that everyone seemed to miss with all of it is that we didn't want our own check-in expedited. We wanted some competency on the part of the Holiday Inn staff and management. They knew in advance what their reservations were and how they should be prepared. There was no remorse on the part of the management and no compensation for the trouble they caused all of their patrons.

If you would like a great Memphis experience, Please pay the money and stay at the Peabody. Their management and concierge staff are wonderful.

Everything was pretty much okay but the water didn't get hot. My husband took a shower that night after driving 10 hours and the water was between warm and cold. Thought maybe it was a fluke, but...again the next morning it was the same. Ack! Every take a shower in tepid water? I froze!!
The room was clean and eveyone friendly. Mary the bartender was great to talk to after we came back from Beale street.
Not sure if I'd ever stay there again. For the price I paid I can go to the Peabody.

First let me apologize for the inconvenience of the water situation during your stay. The hotel had a gas valve that shut down which caused the problem in which you described. The hotel was unaware of this situation until guests brought it to our attention at which point we immediately began the resolve and repair process. Unfortunately, the repair took several hours to complete. Upon completion, the hot water was restored and no further issues have occurred. Again we apologize and appreciate your comments. We do hope on your next visit to Memphis you give us the opportunity to exceed your execeptions.

Me and my husband stayed at this hotel for 5 days. Let me start with arrival the check in was real quick and friendly they were very accommodating when we requested a king non smoking room even tho we booked 2 double beds. The comment about the parking elevator in prior post was on point it is extreamly slow at times and that is because it is also the service elevator so when the staff is using it they at times hold it on floors so it seems broke but we just compromised by using the 3 main elevators which were fast and depending which level we parked walked up one or down one. The room was very clean and nice it was set up nicely the bed was great and the pillow menu was a nice touch. my only complaint is if you are use to sharing the bathroom with your mate forget about it. It was too small for that we had to take turns it was like a closet. Who cares tho the service by the staff more than makes up for it. Housekeeping was a little slow maybe because we were on a high floor and the hotel was completely booked but when they came they were on point all sheets changed, pillow cases removed daily I know I wear makeup, cups changed, coffee pot washed out very nice service on a daily bases. The Restaurant in the lobby was nice it wasn't crowded that was good. All and all it was a Good time had by all.
FYI the front desk has a nice box with printed directions to things from walgreens to food spots that came in handy. Check it out.
