Description: The Rendezvous, founded by Charlie Vergos in 1948, started out as an 80 seat tavern serving ham and cheese sandwiches. When Charlie cleaned out the basement beneath his diner, he discovered a coal chute and started a barbecue legend. The coal chute gave Mr. Charlie a vent for his considerable talent over the grill. He developed a unique seasoning fusing his Greek heritage with spices he enjoyed from New Orleans. Mr. Charlie was a collector and hung antiques, memorabilia, and artwork on the walls. This, along with a soulful jukebox, lively waiters, and aromas from the kitchen helped him to create an atmosphere unequalled in the city of Memphis. Today, the restaurant is still in the Vergos family and run by Mr. Charlie's three kids. The ribs still taste the same as they did in the beginning. Ribs are the Rendezvous' specialty. Years ago, people started calling them "dry ribs" which is a terrible misnomer. The ribs are neither "wet" nor "dry." They are moist and juicy and come heavily basted in a vinegar solution that should be used for dipping, and they are sprinkled with our unique Rendezvous seasoning. Any use of sauce should be on the side. Most of the main dishes come with a 4 oz side of baked beans and a unique mustard/vinegar based cole slaw. Should you want additional sides, they may be purchased for only $1. While Rendezvous is famous for its ribs, don't overlook the other items on the menu. From the beef brisket to the pulled pork shoulder sandwich to grilled chicken everything is excellent and well seasoned. The newest item, the greek salad, is a recipe that comes all the way from the Vergos' village back in Greece. On your way out, pick up a bag of BBQ popcorn. The Rendezvous can handle parties as large as 300, call us for reservations. Reservations are accepted for 15 people or more during the week and 25 people or more on the weekend based on availablity. Our main dining area is in a basement. If you require elevator access please let our hostess know.

“The Best dish and no one talks about it.”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

If dry ribs are right up your alley, then yes, you need to walk up the alley to Charlie Vergos' Rendezvous. However, that is not the best dish served there.

The Skillet-o-Shrimp requires 24 hours advance notice. It is not an appetizer. It is 5 pounds of large shrimp, prepared in a tomato based sauce with a gallon of peproncini peppers and the vinegar, a bag of Lemons and some other stuff. It is served over a slice of white bread. It will feed 5 to 8 easily. It is without a doubt the best dish served.

It is market priced and runs from $125 to $150. . .and worth it.

Service at the Rendevous is generally above average and worth the wait.

“Best Pulled Pork on the Globe!”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

When it comes to pork, no one knows how to do it like the Rendezvous! From the dry ribs to the susage and cheese plate appetizer, they do it best. We had a gathering of about 8 friends before a Memphis Grizzlies basketball game at the Rendevous, and just enjoyed the food and the great service. I had the pulled pork plate that was wonderful after I added the hot and spicy BBQ sauce that they make in-house. Their baked beans are so unique and good, you will probably find yourself asking for more. And the cole slaw is perfect. We all raved about the food afterwards as we made our way to the basketball game. And like Arnold Schwartzenager said, "I'll be back."

“Great service but show up early”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

Took my family to Rendezvous before a Grizzlies game and had a great time. Get there early to avoid the crowds. BBQ is good, not competition, but it is the service, location, and history that makes Rendezvous. The BBQ nachos are better than you'd expect as is the lamb and beef brisket.

“Huge disappointment”
Reviewed January 4, 2014

If you get sold on the hype like we did, order the beef brisket, not the ribs. The whole experience was just terribly average, and we had heard such great things about the place. We were in Memphis for a short visit, I hate that we wasted a meal here.
