Owner description: The Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee is the only Museum of its kind in the United Sates. The Museum grounds consist of 3 and a half acres of land directly over looking the Mississippi River just south of downtown Memphis. On the grounds you will find a sculpture garden, a fully functioning blacksmith shop and foundry, a library holding our permanent collection, and our main Museum which houses rotating exhibitions of emerging and established metalsmiths worldwide. The Metal Museum is the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metal work. This is achieved through exhibitions, collections, conservation, restoration and consulting services, classes, internship and apprenticeship opportunities, and artist residencies. The value of the Metal Museum extends well beyond its exhibitions and facilities recognizing and promoting the careers of metalsmiths.

This is a small museum in a stunning setting up on some bluffs overlooking the river. The buildings are old army barracks and officer's quarters--beautiful in their own right. The exhibits are eye-opening--it's difficult to imagine how metal can be custom-made to form the articles on display--agree completely wih the review that started "taken by surprise" and ended in "enchanted by the craftsmanship". Wish we could have stayed to see the demonstrations.

This was a very interesting stop on a tour of Memphis. The artwork on display was very interesting however we kinda wished the staff was a little friendlier and gave us some information on the artwork in the artists on display.

This was a most surprisingly delightful adventure. We had no idea what to expect, but we're enchanted by the craftsmanship.

I'm always in awe of artists. The details on the items in the gallery were amazing. It was a beautiful day, so we spent time in the gardens before heading out of town. One of a kind items in the gift shop. Wish I had bought more items.

The Metal Museum was a really different and interesting way to spend a few hours. First off: Bring a picnic lunch! There's a pretty gazebo overlooking the river, plus a tree-shaded park, and the afternoon breezes make for a nice little diversion. There's a forge, with artisanal blacksmiths pounding away at various projects, and beautiful pieces, both antique and contemporary, done in various metals -- iron, silver, gold, and inlays of one into another. The gift shop has some very cool stuff, as well -- jewelry, barware, books, gifts, etc. I bought a couple of barrettes with the good French-made clips (very sturdy) that can hold a lot of hair. I highly recommend this!
