Owner description: The Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee is the only Museum of its kind in the United Sates. The Museum grounds consist of 3 and a half acres of land directly over looking the Mississippi River just south of downtown Memphis. On the grounds you will find a sculpture garden, a fully functioning blacksmith shop and foundry, a library holding our permanent collection, and our main Museum which houses rotating exhibitions of emerging and established metalsmiths worldwide. The Metal Museum is the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metal work. This is achieved through exhibitions, collections, conservation, restoration and consulting services, classes, internship and apprenticeship opportunities, and artist residencies. The value of the Metal Museum extends well beyond its exhibitions and facilities recognizing and promoting the careers of metalsmiths.

Before going to the Metal Museum a few days ago, I had not been since 1985 for a sixth grade field trip. It had changed in so many ways, yet that gorgeous backdrop was still the same. There were several small exhibits going on when we were there and they did not disappoint. The landscape is outstanding. Flowers everywhere with beautiful pieces of artwork placed perfectly across the lawn. I highly recommend taking a trip to the museum soon.

There is a quiet park across the street and the Mississippi River on another side of the museum. The staff was friendly and helpful. The displays and a giftshop are housed in 3 buildings on the grounds. The exhibits were very interesting and varied. There is a room housing beautiful Jewish religious artifacts. Artists are in residence. The gift shop has a wide array of hand crafted items to suit every budget. We really enjoyed all of our visit.

The Museum is along the bluffs of the river with an old deserted Merchant marine Hospital next store. The actual Museum is not very large and combined with the grounds would only take an hour. Suggest you check out there web site to see when there is activity going on in the workshops as that will make it more interesting. Cost is $5. Posted by grinandbrakeit.com

The NOMM is a little bit hidden just due to the fact that it's not built in any of the major population or attraction areas of Memphis. However, going there is a real treat. The museum itself is great. They have everything from ornate metal pieces to what would have been fully functional tools, weapons or armour during it's time in history. My favorite part was getting to visit the blacksmith's shop. It was really cool to see these guys making pieces out of a molten hunk of metal. Call ahead about the blacksmith shop, I think it's only open on certain days. They even offer classes, but I have never taken one. Admiring the skill and having the willingness to get that close to melting metal are two different things. I'll leave that to the experts.

This is truly a unique place. make sure to stop by here- it is a little difficult to get to, but you will be rewarded with all the treasures it has to offer. Don't miss the exit or you will end up in West Memphis, AR and have to come back across the river.
