Owner description: The Metal Museum in Memphis, Tennessee is the only Museum of its kind in the United Sates. The Museum grounds consist of 3 and a half acres of land directly over looking the Mississippi River just south of downtown Memphis. On the grounds you will find a sculpture garden, a fully functioning blacksmith shop and foundry, a library holding our permanent collection, and our main Museum which houses rotating exhibitions of emerging and established metalsmiths worldwide. The Metal Museum is the only institution in the United States devoted exclusively to the advancement of the art and craft of fine metal work. This is achieved through exhibitions, collections, conservation, restoration and consulting services, classes, internship and apprenticeship opportunities, and artist residencies. The value of the Metal Museum extends well beyond its exhibitions and facilities recognizing and promoting the careers of metalsmiths.

I have always enjoyed a visit to this museum which concentrates on functional and ornamental metal work rather than paintings, prints, or photos. The exhibits are fun, the gift shop is lovely, and there are studios on the grounds that commonly are open to view.

Interesting art. The workshop didn't have anyone working hot metal so that was very disappointing. Some of the pieces are unusual. Some I thought we not very good. Over all I enjoyed it, but will probably never go back.

This is the only US museum that is specifically about ornamental metalwork. Metalwork is shown as a fine art craft at this very active museum. It hosts solo and group exhibits, has permanent collections of traditional and contemporary work, provides conservation and restoration services, offers classes and demonstrations, internships, artist residencies and apprenticeships, and conducts research. Ornamental metal works are on display inside a beautiful old house and outside in a sculpture garden. The garden's view of the river is so beautiful that some couples chose it as their wedding location. The Museum annually honors master metal smiths. One can see various works made from cast metals, hollowware, jewelry and amazing enameled pieces. The Museum also hosts Repair Days, when metal smiths repair metal items to raise money for Museum programs.
I've seen a few other black-smithing demonstrations, but I found the museum's especially fun and interesting. Be sure to look for the (formerly) white cat. Items forged in the Smithy are sold in the museum's gift shop.

Stopped here for a visit while in Memphis for a long weekend. They have 3 buildings that you can walk through and tour in addition to their grounds. Galleries were small but had very nice pieces in them. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful...in fact we went one day and then back the next day to purchase an item from the gift shop and they remembered us :)
Not an all day attraction but something that's worth a visit and a few hours of your time (especially on a hot afternoon).

Nice location, near historic areas, friendly staff, a little off the main, but if you like metal sculpture, you will enjoy!
