“Beautiful, fine, genteel hotel”
Reviewed December 5, 2007

The Peabody has a long-standing reputation for being a fine hotel, and
it lives up to that reputation. The building is beautiful and classic,
especially dressed up for Christmas. The centerpiece of the lobby is the fountain with the famous Peabody ducks, and their march in and out
is a real event. The front desk staff, valets, housekeepers, and all the other hotel staff we met were perfectly hospitable and friendly (I'm a Southerner, and these folks demonstrated true Southern hospitality). My hotel room was one of the largest I've ever had, very
comfortable, had a nice vanity and dressing area, and an actual walk-in closet -- the biggest closet I have ever seen in a hotel room. The bed was very confortable with plush bedding and so many pillows. The food served by the hotel at my meeting was excellent, especially the dessert. The Peabody is on my list of favorite hotels, and I'm already
planning my next visit.

The Peabody is a pretty neat, but old, hotel. I heard it was originally built in the 1800's, though don't know for sure. The rooms are clearly quite old but pretty well updated and reasonably nice. Our rooms weren't ready until after 5 pm which may have just been a fluke, but we were with a convention and they may have just been overloaded with check-in. The service was really good, the staff very friendly with all the polite Southern charm you would come to expect. The ducks in the lobby are an interesting gag and is the unique identity of the hotel.

Overall, a pleasant place for a business function and probably a good place for pleasure as well.

All the harsh criticism about the Peabody and Chez Phillipe is hard to believe. I guess it all depends on your attitude. I am a frequent business and lesuire traveler. When it comes to food I don't cut corners. As we all know, price never guarantees a great meal. With that being said, my wife and I got 5 star treatment at the Peabody & Chez Phillipe. The Peabody blows away the St. Francis in San Francisco. The people in Memphis are the nicest around. Our 7 course meal and wine pairing rivaled that of Cyrus in Healdsburg, CA. We made personal friends w/ Jason the Peabody Duck Master. I recommend heading to the Skyway and watch the ducks head down to the lobby versus waiting in the lobby with the masses to watch the ducks arrive or head up.If you think the ducks are over-rated than you don't appreciate the history of the Peabody. Our room was spacious. The bed was comfy. The service was second to none. The bottom line is that there will always be people that find fault in everything. My wife and I find the time to to go out of our way to be friendly with everyone on staff. Guess what? They bend over backwards in return. You catch more flys with honey than with vinegar. I highly recommend the Peabody & Chez Phillipe.

My husband and I along with another couple recently spent 3 nights at the Peabody. Our first impression was WOW- what a beautiful lobby! We had arrived early and since check-in is at 4:00, our rooms were not ready (our friend's room was ready, however). We were told that housekeeping would get on it immediately while we had lunch. Two hours later, our room was still not ready. The front desk was so rude and actually blamed our travel agent for the problem. The problem was that a huge convention was checking in and that was their priority. They finally gave us a room but not the room we paid for. The king deluxe room that we reserved turned into a small standard room near the elevator. Well, 3 rooms and 2 hours later, we finally got the room we booked. It was a large corner room with a nice sitting area. The only negative with the room was the fact that the small closet was in the already small bathroom.
With the exception of the front desk and the concierge who seemed disinterested and not very knowledgeable, the rest of the staff was friendly and helpful. We had breakfast and lunch in Capriccios which was OK. Besides the regular menu for breakfast, they had a small buffet. Choices were minimal and containers were left empty for a longtime.
Be sure to see the infamous "Peabody Ducks" and enjoy cocktails in the beautiful lobby lounge. Also, be sure to visit "Lansky's", the clothier to the King, and say hi to Mr. Lansky. He's full of information about Elvis. The hotel is just a block from Beale St., but be careful at night. It's not the safest part of town.
There is a shopping mall adjacent to the hotel, but when we were there, most of the stores were closed or empty. If you're looking for souvenirs, shop in the hotel. Beale St. also has souvenir shops.
After the first day, we did enjoy our stay, but thought it was not worth the cost.

The Peadbody is the classic Memphis hotel (the classic Delta hotel for that matter). Review...

GOOD:
--One of the great local-flavor hotels in the south, and the classic property in Memphis
--Wonderful lobby bar, and of course the ducks on parade
--Great historical feel
--Rooms nicely furnished

BAD:
--Rooms are small and not that well kept-up
--Prices are usually absurdly high for the area

If you want the classic Memphis experience and don't mind paying through the nose, go for it. But I'd recommend it more heartily if you can get a deal, as its multiple times as expensive as pretty much every other Memphis hotel.

By the way, if its the atmosphere, lobby bar, duck parade and a mint julip that are on your mind, just stay elsewhere and pay a vist to the Peabody.

First off, you have to realize that this is an OLD hotel, and has its quirks. Elevators are a bit slow, floor plans a bit odd. But it is well kept, and quite charming. My room had an odd shape, but was large and comfortable. No noise issues. Had one meal there, and it was fine. Lots of cool restaurants within a block.

The "walking of the ducks" is a big attraction, but I could have easily skipped it!

Beal Street is just a couple blocks away, and is a great place to visit for live music, good food, and bars with character.

One word of caution, walking to/from Beal, you will likely be hit up for money, perhaps in a not so friendly fashion. So, travel in groups at night, or take a cab. Once yuo get to Beal, there are plenty of cops and it feels very safe.
