Owner description: Sun Studio - The place where an 18 year old Elvis Presley recorded his first song. It’s well-known in the music industry as "The Birthplace of Rock 'N' Roll" and the most famous recording studio in the world. Opened by rock pioneer Sam Phillips in 1950, this national Historic Landmark is where superstar musicians like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and countless others started their recording careers. Today, Sun Studio still serves as a recording studio in the evenings while hosting public tours during the daytime hours.

“Sun studio - impressive”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

What we were first impressed by was how unimpressive the building itself is. How this humble structure with it's simple interior was a birthplace for so many fantastic musicians.

Our tour guide was very passionate about the facility, the history and her job making the tour a great experience.

“Interesting tour”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

I really liked the tour of Sun Studio. It was very interesting and our tour guide was enthusiastic which helped with the experience. Learning about the history of rock and roll and this studio was well worth the visit. It is a small studio and I think the visit took about 1 hour. We took a free bus from Graceland to the studio and then another free bus into the city. The free bus shuttles are a great convenience to visitors who don't want to drive into the city. The downside to the shuttles is they don't run into the evening. I think we took the last shuttle out at 6pm so check with the driver for the schedule. Thanks for the convenient shuttles!

“Stepping in to history”
Reviewed October 28, 2012

Getting inside the infamous Sun Studio in Memphis where Rock n’ Roll starter can be a crowded experience because there is a huge turnover of people constantly walking in there to have a look and feel of the history. The building itself is a long but narrow brown colored brick house situated on a corner some 2 kilometers outside downtown Memphis.

When you enter the place you enter a small and crowded café where they sell all kinds of coffees, milkshakes and sodas but don’t expect to find beers there because they don’t have. They also have some brownies but the major turnover comes from souvenirs.

I found out that it was a great idea to wait until after a tour started to order something because you have the place almost to yourself afterwards. I ordered a café Latte and gave myself time to sit down and enjoy the place with all the memorabilia on the walls and look at the pictures of the stars in their early age hanging over the mixers.

It was a great place to get away from the heat and just relax but the peace only lasted for a short while before the café stated to get filled up for the next tour.

“Great trip”
Reviewed October 27, 2012

We headed over to Sun Studios on our tour-of-Elvis day, expecting to see and hear all about the king. But it was SO much more than that! They gave a great overview of the history of the place, of Sam Phillps, of all the great artists that have recorded there over the years. After the history lesson and visiting the small museum, we finally headed downstairs to the actual recording studio. Gave us chills to be standing in the place where so many greats played and recorded. They even let you pose with the very mic Elvis used. A must-see for music fans.
