Owner description: Sun Studio - The place where an 18 year old Elvis Presley recorded his first song. It’s well-known in the music industry as "The Birthplace of Rock 'N' Roll" and the most famous recording studio in the world. Opened by rock pioneer Sam Phillips in 1950, this national Historic Landmark is where superstar musicians like Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, B.B. King, Howlin' Wolf, Johnny Cash, Roy Orbison and countless others started their recording careers. Today, Sun Studio still serves as a recording studio in the evenings while hosting public tours during the daytime hours.

The Sun Studio is an extraordinary time capsule of the birth of rock and roll, marvelously unchanged from the days when Elvis and Johnny Cash jammed in the early days of radio ready music. You can see the spot where Elvis stood when he sang for his first contract, and hear the tour guide demonstrate Johnny Cash's percussive guitar style that became signature sounds on a Cash song. Our tour guide, Lydia, was energetic, informative, and clearly in awe of the history surrounding us. The tour was not too long, but thorough and memorable. If yer in town to see the musical connection to Memphis, if you miss this tour, then you've missed 50% of what you NEED to see.

My friend and I were in Memphis mainly to see Graceland, but wanted to take in some of the other sites in town. We took the FREE shuttle from Graceland and had the best time at the Sun Studios tour. It is amazing how much great music came out of such an unassuming looking building. Our tour guide was Jane and she was enthusiastic and knowledgable and presented all the information in an upbeat style. The tour was about an hour. I learned a lot about the early music scene and I would encourage others to take the tour. It is worth it to see such an exciting part of American music history. We are still talking about it!

Definitely a must see while in Memphis. Highly recommend taking the bus from Graceland to Sun Studios, then hop back on and head to Beale St, then catch it again and go back to Graceland. Free ride downtown if nothing else. But tour is definitely worth your time if you are a rock and roll fan - and even if you are not. My 15 year old grandson enjoyed the tour too.

A must see for anyone interested in the roots of rock and roll. The guided tour lasts about an hour and you get to see a small museum with many artifacts and the actual studio. It's funny how such an unassuming studio has produced so many legends. The story about the million dollar quartet is great and now I want to see the show. At $12, it is reasonably priced.

This tour is a short tour that one must visit especially if you are into music. Although it does not permit children under the age of 5, it takes only an hour, so one may still fit it in while the children wait at the hotel or in the cafe/diner linked with the studio. (My son and husband waited for me at the hotel, and it was just enough time for my husband to feed and change my son while I did the tour. ) It is a pretty cool experience to stand in the same room as some of the musical greats that had gotten their start at Sun Studios. The tour is informative and it is interesting to hear the musical clips that were recorded at the studio. I would definitely recommend taking the time to do this short tour whether it is before the start of your day or after you have done other things in Memphis. It is very easy to fit into your schedule and not a huge inconvenience if someone can stay with the young children for a short time.
