Very educational; wonderful tour guides. Learn how slaves transmitted coded information via songs (Negro spirituals) and quilts (patterns and symbols) to escape captivity. The Burkle Estate is about 10 minutes away from Beale Street-well worth the drive and it has air-conditioning.

As others have pointed out, don't judge the quality of this site from the exterior, which is a bit run down. Inside is an excellent overview of the trans-Atlantic slave trade, the Underground Railroad, and the history of the Burkle family. Although it's tucked away in a non-touristed section of Memphis, this site's importance to our history is as great as the other, more visited, locations in the city.

The plus to not having many visitors is that you can interact a lot more with the guide, and get a better presentation.

The outside of the house almost made us not go in, but I'm glad we did.
This is a must see for everyone, you will learn so much history and be touched by the actions of the Burkle Family. The tour guides were knowledgeable and friendly. The house in itself has so much history. If you are in Memphis, you must see this!

From the outside, the looks of the place will not se your expectations high. However, this really is a MUST see for all Americans who want to greater understand a dark period of our history. Most likely the place will not be busy which will provide you for a very personal tour from VERY knowledgable and friendly staff. They take you from the time of the Middle Passage of slavery to America all the way up to Abolition and the Underground Railroad. This was an actual stop on the Underground Railroad and you will see the trap door and cellar.....you will almost feel a part of what those escapes slaves must have felt. I am a history teacher, but even still I learned so much that I didn't know prior to this visit. There is just so much interesting material here. The tour lasts about an hour. Also, you will get to see many original furnishings from the 1800s. The house seems to be falling apart.....kinda sad that they don't have the money to fix it up. It is a gem.
