The Rock 'n' Soul museum is conveniently located in downtown Memphis across the street from the Gibson Guitar factory. It starts with a short introductory film and then there is a self-guided audio-assisted tour around the museum. The range of artists on exhibition was vast, the exhibits and commentary very interesting and great selections of music available on the headsets throughout.
The museum covers both the Stax and Sun studio artists as well as providing a historical and social context for the development of the music.
The tour finished with a great photo-exhibition on the Memphis Horns.
We were there for over 2 hours and admission was only $11.
Highly recommended for anyone interested in music and social history.

The exhibits provide a comprehensive overview of the origins and history of Memphis music. The audio tour was excellent providing great music samples as well as a historical narrative. Of the three music museums we visited -- Sun and Stax being the other two -- this was overall the best one.

You should allow at least 1-1/2 hours.

If you are only going to do one music museum in Memphis then this is the one. It brings it all together in one place. Blues, Soul, and Rock. Located just off Beale street it's clean, cool and the staff is friendly. As I expected from a Smithsonian exhibit the information is well organized and presented. There was lots of music to listen to while browsing the exhibits as well as the informative narration. It's a can't miss for baby boomers but not so great for children. I planned on a quick visit, but ended up closing the place down and still didn't get to hear all the tunes. Here's a tip...if you buy a ticket late in the day and close it down but want to come back and continue the next day, they will write something on your ticket and you can get in free the next day.

This museum, being affiliated with the Smithsonian, is a veritable warehouse and treasure trove of rock & soul music. The exhibits were highly interactive and very interesting.
