I have been to Graceland 4 times and each time I go there, it is very touching. Although I was not born until one year after the King of Rock and Roll died, I believe Elvis has left one huge legacy behind. To be able to go inside the very house that he lived in is simply astounding. To some it is just an old house, but to me it is Elvis' home.

Elvis fan or not, you should visit Graceland. Although the mansion, itself, is smaller than I expected and visitors are not allowed upstairs to the private family space, the grounds are expansive, and there is much to see. The decor is definitely over the top, starting with velvet everywhere, shag rugs on floors and ceilings and mirrors everywhere, including ceilings. The audio guide describes the house as Elvis would have lived in it, so you can actually picture him watching television, having dinner, relaxing in various spots, and enjoying family and friends. There are additional buildings with memorabilia as well as one with the piano he played the morning he died. And, or course, the tour ends with his grave.
We took the Platinum Tour, which includes his planes, cars, and two videos. I would definitely take this longer tour.
We bought our tickets ahead of time because we had heard about long waits and the possibility that no tickets would be available. Even if you purchase in advance, leave enough time to wait in line t pick up the tickets and to walk from the parking lot to the shuttle area. The day we went was not crowded, but when we returned to the ticket center around 11, there was a long line waiting for the shuttle bus. Crowded is a relative term.

What an experience - almost like a travel back in time. I'm not a huge Elvis fan but glad I did this anyway since it is a piece of history very pertinent to music and Memphis in general. The house is as it was back in the day - virtually untouched since - so for those reviews below suggesting that their 'neighbours have better houses now' clearly don't appreciate the fact that this is supposed to depict how Elvis lived THEN, and it is depicted very genuinely and without any make-believe/artificially recreated parts. How you see it is how it was. Elvis fanatic or not, this is a must do while in Memphis. Suggest doing the Platinum tour too. Only a few dollars more than the Mansion-only tour and includes a LOT more. Allow about 4 hours to see it all though. Perhaps the only negative (if it even is a negative) point about the whole experience is that there are way too many gift/souvenir shops. Seen one, seen them all, but the tour(s), memorabilia, displays and museums are all authentic and fantastic!

The audio tour is very informative and listening to Lisa Marie and Precilla interject throughout gives you personal and touching insights into Elvis' life. It was amazing to see rooms and sights that we have only ever seen in books and in documentaries. The car museum opposite was a welcome bonus as was the Lisa Marie jet. Souveniers abound but the cd/record shop has everything he ever recorded as well as limited edition framed discs if you want to splash out. We travelled by taxi from downtown Memphis $30 however the FREE Memphis tour bus running constantly between Gracelands Beale Street and Sun Studios is brilliant.
Well worth the trip and another thing off our wishlist.

While the stores and museums across the street from Graceland are commercialized, Graceland itself retains its original dignity and grace. Walking through the rooms you almost expect Elvis to come down the stairs to greet you. The furnishings are well kept and authentic to the original. The building with his gold and platinum records and awards reminds you how prolific but short his career really was.
