We moved to Memphis from St Louis, which has a perfectly awesome zoo. Other than paying for parking, the St Louis Zoo was free to St Louis residents. We all paid a small part of our taxes to support the zoo, and everybody used it for fun family days and picnics in the park. In Memphis, you pay to park, you pay to get in. We wanted to see the pandas and found the to see them we had to stop and pay a couple of more times along the way. Then when we finally saw them, the pandas were behind glass in a dirty cage. Both were sleeping, and one of them was resting its head on some of its own poo. Yuck! That was disgusting! At least keep the cage clean for the star attraction we paid extra to see. The money should be used to do the pandas some good,
The zoo in St Louis has a restaurant with nice food just inside the gate so you can park your car, run in and get a nice fresh sandwich and fruit salad to take outside and enjoy while soaking in the view. We occasionally went there just for lunch. Not him Memphis. We tried to get lunch in Memphis and were served overpriced, poor quality grilled food. We did get to watch monkeys through a glass, but the tables weren't nice. They were all connected in long rows and not clean. Expensive, bad food, in a dirty restaurant. The atmosphere was awful. We won't go there again.
I do wish Memphis would learn from St Louis' example and fund the zoo from taxes so they could both fix up the zoo without having to beg for money and be able to provide free admission to all Memphians.
