“Beautiful Estate - Must visit”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 13, 2007

What a wonderful surprise to find at the end of a bumpy dirt track, hidden by dense follage! This is a must visit place for old world charm, seclusion, romance, service. We were driving to our next B&B & saw a small sign so stopped in to look. Had a great lunch, my first really great cup of coffee for weeks in a beautiful lounge. This is were I'd go for a romantic getaway!

What a lovely place. We did a one week tour through Scotland and this was the first hotel we stayed in. The rooms have an old fashioned, cosy feel to them, the only thing I wasn't too convinced about was the duvet - there was no duvet but a rug and bedsheets. The location is absolutely stunning, we walked along Loch Oich and River Garry which are both in the hotel grounds. We first weren't sure whether we should have dinner in the hotel, but were so glad that we decided to go for it because the food was delicious and by far the best we had during our holiday. I am not usually into "fancy food" but this was really nice, not too over-the-top. I loved the breakfast too - freshly baked scones! We can't wait to go back.

We stayed here for 2 nights in early November and were surpised to find it so busy! Last stayed in 1970s and it has not lost its charm. The ambience is excellent, very attentive staff, good food and comfortable bedrooms all in a beautiful setting make this an excellent hotel to visit for a short or longer break.

We stayed at the Glenagrry Hotel on the way to the Orkney Islands. It was all that we had hoped for. They put us in a family room. The furnishings are a bit old, but you are in an old castle hotel! Plus, I love old homes. The kids loved the room. We looked out over the gardens and had a claw bathtub. The kids had a blast running around the gardens and rolling in the grass. The food was terrific. They had games in the library that the kids could play. They played chess. The grounds were nice to walk around on the few paths leading to the castle ruin on the property.
It had a comfortableness about it that made you feel like you had come to visit friends or relatives. We would difintely recommend it, especially if you have young kids!

  • Liked — The beauty of the old home and the friendly staff.
  • Disliked — They were worn but very comfortable.
  • Tips/Secrets — It's a good choice!

My 25 year old son and I recently enjoyed an overnight stay. We booked direct having read a number of reviews on this website and were delighted with our choice.

We booked a "standard" room but found it to be large, well furnished and comfortable, with an enormous bathroom with bath and separate shower, and all with a great view over the garden as well! It's true that we had to lug our bags up 2 flights of steps, but that was only because we arrived at lunchtime on a cold and wet day, chose to have lunch before even taking the bags out of the car, and so didn't take advantage of the offer of help.

We had lunch, dinner and breakfast in the hotel. The food was good and the wine list reasonably extensive and containing some great quality wines. Compared with Australia the prices were steep, but, hey, we were on holidays and the overall experience made the cost a secondary consideration.

We wandered the grounds down to the Loch, visited the old run down castle on site and generally chilled out. We found the service to be friendly and professional rather than warm, and it certainly wasn't obtrusive. I remember going down to one of the 2 drawing rooms before dinner to have a drink, but no-one came near us and so we went straight through to the dining room. If we needed something it was easier at times to wander up to the reception desk and ask. The response was always quick and friendly.

My son found parts of the atmosphere "spooky", which was a word that interestingly appeared a couple of times in the Guest Book. However, we found the whole experience to be positive and I certainly intend returning, although next time it will be for longer than one night.

  • Liked — ambience, unobtrusive service, good food and wine, and the chance to chill out!
  • Disliked — lugging bags up 2 floors, but my choice.
  • Tips/Secrets — Could be hard to find without a good map.

We stayed here on the night of the 6th October, we had eaten in the restuarant before and were more than happy so we decided to book it for our anniversary. The hotel is not really too modern (although it does have free wireless internet) it appears to be based around the traditional scottish big house, for example there is no bar, you order drinks at reception and then enjoy them in the study or the library. The service was excellent with 5 waiting staff for around 30 diners and there were always at least 2 people on reception. The room was large but a little basic and the bed was tiny (I am 6' 5'').... overall though it was excellent and and hour away from Inverness and 45 minutes away from Fort William.

  • Liked — food, wine location and service
  • Disliked — bit expensive for the room and room a little dated
  • Tips/Secrets — no lift in the hotel.... seek out the walks especially the river walk

My wife and I only stayed in this hotel for one night and being a professional fire and safety consultant and ex fireman I always examine the fire precautions and escape routes.
Having taken a quick tour I was extremely worried by what I found and this included Fire Doors "wedged open", Fire Doors with excessive gaps, Fire Doors not meeting current standards, incorrect signage, indicator lights not working on emergency lights and Bedroom Doors not fire resisting ( it is an accepted standard in most countries that fire doors are provided to bedrooms). By the very nature of the building the escape routes are quite complicated, particularly from the upper floors, and the lack of fire seperation caused by the poor fire standards and "wedged open" fire doors " would make escape in a fire situation extremely difficult, if not impossible.
I have written to the owner pointing out these problems (with photographs) and he replied that the hotel has a Fire Certificate, has regular inspections by the Authorities and also has a Fire Risk Assessment. This to me is a very worrying situation and I have referred it to Chief Fire Officer for his observations.
Take a look at the pictures and see if you would feel safe staying there?

  • Liked — Location
  • Disliked — Poor fire safety
  • Tips/Secrets — Ask if fire safety has been brought up to modern standards and look for the problems that have been identied in the review.
