“Arrived by boat and got a gong!!!!”
Reviewed September 13, 2013 via mobile

Picking up our boat we decided not to travel too far before our first night stopover. We moored at the hotels pier and smartened up for supper. After a short walk we were seated with our g&ts in a rather splendid hotel. After selecting our supper we were unexpectedly requested from our seats by a loud dinner gong. Great stuff and adds to the atmosphere of the place. Being off a boat we weren't as formally dresses as some hotel guests, but what the heck.....it was the best meal we had all week....and a comfortable overnight mooring as well.

This is a lovely hotel well off the main road and with lots of walks within its grounds. There is a loch, river, woods and its own small castle ruin. The staff are very friendly and the breakfasts were very tasty. There were lots of waiters/waitresses so the breakfasts were served quickly. There was no buffet table it was entirely waiter service. We had a standard twin room which overlooked a meadow of sheep. There was a lovely real fire to welcome guests in the evening in reception. Downsides to this hotel is the decor is a little tired and dated. There were some noisy guests in the room above ours who were still talking and moving about at 1 am.

This hotel is what you would expect when traveling in the Highlands. Historic ruins on the property. Beautiful sitting rooms overlooking the loch. Just superb. Spent two nights here using as our base to travel. Lovely rooms and delicious breakfast. We upgraded to a superior room while our friends had a standard. Our room was much much larger however, theirs was recently renovated. Their bathroom was new, ours looked like it was from the 30's. Clean, in great working order, large just old. Quaint actually. The standard room's tv was flat screened and had many cable channels with news, our tv was old, small and not many channels....but really who cares. Four poster beds were lovely but mattress sagged in the middle. One is in the Highlands for the beauty and to get away from it all. I would recommend staying here. Walk the property to the ruins and around. Lovely.

The people are very welcoming and helpful.
The food is excellent and, despite other reviews, served very professionally by charming staff. The atmosphere is relaxed. There is no dress code so the ties can stay at home.
The grounds are beautiful and you're right in amongst the scenery you've come for. Our room looked out across the loch to the other side of the Great Glen.
The only thing missing is a bar. You can order drinks and have them brought to you in the library but a bar might create a bit more buzz.
The owners could also consider keeping a stock of local maps to sell to walkers.

Room Tip: We had the pricey room with the four poster....and loved it

The Glengarry Castle Hotel is a grand residence set in beautiful grounds, with the backdrop of the Loch Oich and castle ruins.
The staff are friendly, attentive and welcoming.
Our room (25) was up in the gods, small but cosy with good views over the grounds. No flat-screen TV in this room but other rooms appear to have them. The disadvantage of this room is the separate but private bathroom and toilet across the corridor with dressing gowns provided to save embarrassment!
Dinner was good, although a little rushed. We sat by the wonderful open log fire (lit in both the main reception rooms) after dinner finishing off our wine, with the rain beating against the windows - a very atmospheric place.
Our room was a little tatty in places and the bathroom had peeling paper which reception said was due for updating this winter.
Overall a great place but I'd question the value for money of our particular room in its current condition.

We've stayed here a number of times. Lovely location with friendly staff. It's a little different to the run-of-the-mill "chain hotels", with character. Family run. Recommended. It's in a quiet area but has some good local walking and ideally situated for sightseeing in the great Glen area.

What a wonderful place! We stayed three nights and loved every minute. The staff was warm and welcoming, and full of helpful information about the area (especially going to the Falls of Foyers on the east side of Loch Ness), the room was warm clean and well kept, the hotel has a lot of character, and is centrally located to Fort William, Inverness and the Isle of Skye. The staff could not have been more helpful to us whi;e we were there. The setting on Loch Oich is just as beautiful as the images show. We enjoyed our stay here, and hope to return some time.
