Just had a fantastic week at this charming location, which is brilliantly placed for exploring a truly beautiful part of Scotland.
The accommodation was basic but comfy and really cosy when the wood burner was going.
We had a really warm welcome from the owner who was ready to help with anything and was enthusiastic and knowledgable about the local area.
The fish and chip shop in Newton Stewart is really good value and has a big menu. There is also a Sainsburys and Aldi there plus a petrol station.
Pubwise, Wigtown is a bit grim but there is a terrific pub at the Isle of Whithorn called The Steam Packet, where we enjoyed an excellent carvery, exceptionally reasonably priced. The range of local beers and ciders was really impressive.
Days out-wise, the trip down to the Mull of Galloway is well worth doing, especially combined with Logan Fish Ponds at Port Logan - eccentric but totally fun!
You also must, must, must visit the red deer hide in the Galloway Forest Park - we saw two stags at close quarters from the hide.
Stargazing at the nearby visitor centre is also really good but take insect repellent.
There are good castles at Treve near Castle Douglas and Inn of Fleet, both of which can be combined with a stop at Cream of Galloway ice cream place.
All in all, a great place for a family holiday - the accommadtion is no-frills but the place is charming and the pool a fantastic resource and well kept by the owner.
Loved the wee cottage plus living with farm animals right next to you
The swimming pool was a bonus
If we had children with us the play barn would have been welcome
Excellent value for money, very good facilitys, owners very friendly and helpful never too busy for a chat, cottage beautiful, loved the log burner didnt need it on but couldnt resit, luved the wee lambs that would come and greet you as well as the chickens. Swimming pool was a great extra. Would definitely recommend and would return again. Wish we could of stayed longer.
Very comfortable and not fancy. Owners were very helpful with recommendations for sites and eating. Baby lambs came for petting. Would rent again.
We stayed here for a week in August this year. The cottage was lovely as was the surrounding area. The swimming pool was a bonus. The only down fall to this property was the games room. Most of the things in there was either broken, dirty or just couldn't be used. Needs to be updated. Great base to explore surrounding towns.
Had a great week here, cottage was excellent, really nice high powered shower with very controllable heat. A log fire... A very cozy log fire that sets this whole idyllic location off.. Easy to find, Hazel was lovely. I can't sing the praises of these cottages enough. It's surprisingly well located too.. We used it as a good location for things to do as our main family holiday. From horse riding to sea fishing and everything in between. Will be back next year (or sooner)
