Nether Barr Steading
Reviewed July 29, 2010

What to expect? First of all, a friendly welcome. We were made to feel very welcome during our stay. The accommodation is split into several individual units, set around a courtyard with picnic tables. We stayed in the largest of these (The Byre), with a big well equipped kitchen/diner, good sized lounge (flat screen telly), two bathrooms one with bath, and 3 bedrooms. The decor is pleasant, though there are occasional signs of wear & tear - but nothing more serious than some scuff marks here & there, and it was spotlessly clean throughout. The bed in the main bedroom was comfortable and a good size.

There are fabulous views from the lounge across the river Cree and to the Galloway hills, and a large grass paddock leading down to the river with a picnic table, a really idyllic spot when the sun is shining.

The location is ideal for exploring the Galloway area - Newton Stewart is about a mile away, and there is a handy new cycle path just at the top of the entrance driveway! Nearby there is Wigtown (Scottish book town), several great sandy beaches and the Galloway forest itself, with the 7Stanes cycle centre.

If you've never been to Galloway before, you'll be delighted as we were by how quiet it is - empty roads, beaches and hills! For walkers & cyclists especially it is absolutely fantastic.

All in all, Nether Barr was ideal for our active break in Galloway and I'd have no hesitation in giving it a warm recommendation for couples and families.

Nether Barr Steading is set just off the road and a few minutes drive from Newton Stewart. Set in 15 acres of farm land Nether Barr Steading is a beautiful converted barn divided into self catering lodges and a restaurant. We stayed in the Hay Loft, a large two bed (double and twin) with beautiful views over the hillside and river Cree.

The Lodge consists of an open plan kitchen/diner/living room with ample space. The lounge has a large window looking out over the fields and river Cree. We kept the curtains open until complete darkness as the views were breathtaking (see pictures).

Upstairs there is a huge landing big enough to store your luggage, and whatever else you have! The bathroom is a good size as are the two bedrooms. Both are tastefully furnished, functional and spacious. The twin room has a sky light and pull-out second bed. The double room is big enough to fit a travel cot and has lined curtains which came in very handy when it came time to putting our baby down to sleep.

The accommodation is very clean and well maintained. All modcons are provided including fridge/freezer, washer/dryer, microwave, hoover, iron and board, kettle and all necessary cooking utensils for the number of guests. Towels and bedlinen is also provided.

Lodges and apartments come equipped with TV, DVD and stereo and there is an extensive book and DVD liberary at reception. The lodges cater from 2 - 6 people.

The staff are exceptionally friendly and the complex is family run. The owner met us on arrival and made us feel very welcome. The staff offer knowledge of the local area and attractions.

The restaurant is small and cosy and serves great food. We had fish pie (highly recommended), steak and creme brulee. The steak was cooked to perfection and the food was very well presented. The restaurant has a fish night on a Friday and we had to book due to its popularity.

We had an excellent stay at Nether Barr. It was wonderful to wake up to the spectacular views of the Scottish hillside and the complex was lovely and quiet. Nether Barr is the kind of homely place you could quite happily spend all week in as it is so cosey.

As the Scottish weather was on our side we took advantage of the tourist attractions inluding Cream O Galloway, an organic farm specialising in ice cream which is a) the best ice cream I've ever tasted and b) an excellent place to take the kids, Ports William and Patrick, local Port towns (more like villages - very qaunt), Wigtown (the book town) and Kirkcudbright a lovely little town about half an hour away which is very popular during school holidays, and David Coultard originates from around the area, infact there is a David Coultard Museum in one of the nearby villages! As the sea is close by there are plenty of little routes to take you to very secluded little beaches which are great for picnics, just drive out of Kirkcudbright and take your pick.

We are so pleased with our stay we are hoping to go back later in the year.
