We were visiting Stranraer to collect another Oor Wullie statue and it was in front of the castle, so we decided to have a wee look. We started at the cellar and climbed up the very wonky stone staircase, lots of rooms off the staircase. Interesting history, was a prison. On the roof what a view. Well worth the climb. Coming down not so much fun, very steep stairs and they are very uneven. No way to pass on these stairs.

We have walked past this so many times over the years but on a wet
T Friday took the plunge to visit this free attraction - and found a hidden gem full of fascinating history which on a sunny day will have fantastic views up Loch Ryan. Displays are interesting with fascinating insights on each of four levels about this. Eddie also castle turned town jail. Suitable for older children who can read and not for the infirm as the stairs are windy and uneven in places - they are very old! Great conservation job and an interesting hour spent at this attraction.

Small enough that if you're pushed for time you don't have to do rush/miss bits but well worked out with each room having boards about said room and a "touchy-feely" for kids to not let them get bored.

As it's sitting in the centre of town you can - on a clear day - have an amazing view if you climb to the top of the tower
