Sited in the centre of town and with free access this is a treat. Helpful staff and a good pocket history displayed as you climb up. The roof top offers amazing views as an added bonus.

The Castle of St John stands in the centre of Stranraer and is a very interesting attraction to see. Admission is free however donations are accepted. There are several floors to explore that depict the history of the building and it’s function including it being the Towns prison. The steep winding staircase leads to the roof where great views of the town and surrounding area can be enjoyed. Fabulous.

We visited here with our 3 children aged 13, 11 and 5. Entry is free and it is located in the main town centre so easy to get to.
There are lots of stairs and the staircase is quite narrow so those with mobility issues may struggle, although I did see a man with a stick coming down so it is possible with time and care.
We all found the history of this place really interesting especially the information surrounding it’s use as a prison.
It’s worth climbing to the top for views of Stranraer.
Unfortunately the shop doesn’t really add anything and is just full of tat so we exited this part pretty quickly.
I would definitely recommend spending some time looking around this place though.

This is a very interesting example of a Scottish tower house, right in the centre of Stranraer. The building has changed use and function over the years, and the rooms have great explanations as to their uses. There is a great deal of the social history explained too. The terrace on the roof has a wonderful panoramic view. The staff are friendly and engaging.
