Disappointed at the dated decor of the room. Sayed two nights DBB. The food and the service in the restaurant were excellent. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The hotel is two minutes walk from the town centre and a good base for exploring the area.

We returned to the castle this week for a short break. It was our 4th return in the last two years. The service was excellent, food absolutely fabulous.
it was good to see that the rather quaint decor which sets this hotel apart from your run of the mill novotels etc, has not changed.
It was also brilliant to enjoy some of the delicious fudge after dinner.
Will be back again, maybe in the winter when the curling rink is open.
Unlike a recent stay at a more expensive hotel in London, there was no problem providing soya milk ( they were advised of the need in advance)
All members of staff were friendly, courteous without overstepping the mark.
A truly old fashioned, good value for money relaxing break.

Went on a short 3-night break earlier this month. Having stayed at the North West Castle a few years ago, we were pleased to find it had hardly changed. They were offering 3 nights for the price of two DBB, which was excellent value at £60 pppn even paying extra for a front room.

Our experience was similar to other reviewers. The decor and style is slightly old-fashioned, but in a good way. The service is good too, particularly in the dining room which is a highlight of this hotel. The food is imaginative and nicely presented without being pretentious. The dining room is well staffed and the service attentive and efficient without being intrusive. The three evenings we were there, we were entertained at dinner by a pianist performing on good vintage grand piano. How many places manage that these days? The dining room also has good views up Loch Ryan. The feel of the place reminded me very much of the old British Transport Hotels in the 1970s, which were a favourite.

Overall it was a most enjoyable stay. Stranraer has some interesting shops and the Town Museum and St. John's Tower are well worth a visit. We also visited several of the gardens in the area including Logan, Castle Kennedy and Glenwhan. Unfortunately, the hotel now overlooks the disused ferry port as the operation moved to Cairnryan last year, but presumably this will be redeveloped in future. On our previous visit it was busy with activity.

We decided to expand our boundaries a bit from our favourite Macmillan hotel in Peebles. After the initial disappointment of my room looking out over a flat roof with black plastic bags flapping to scaffolding on the opposite part of the hotel, I set my mind to just enjoy what was good about it. Dog friendly, (though not in public places) and amazing doggy walks along the seafront after dinner. Four courses of truly excellent and artistically presented food - congratulations to the chef. Breakfast was a Marmite-free zone! My 89 year old Mum was delighted with her accessible room and both our rooms were a fair size. The staff were very willing to respond cheerfully if asked to vacuum the room or such. We explored all round the Stranraer area and enjoyed amazing sunny weather - there is such a lot to see without needing to pay a penny. I could position my Mum up close to wonderful scenery and leave her for a bit. We got chatting to friendly guests many of whom return again and again so I guess we all find a favourite and mostly stick with it.

Room Tip: Hadnt expected my view to be scaffolding but dont seem to be any with sea views anyway

Stayed with the family - this hotel has charm and good decent customer service "like what it used to be".
Dinner was great and choices changed nightly - nice touch was tablet in the lounge afterwards with coffee - Breakfast kept us going well into the afternoon. We will go back ....just need to find a free weekend.
Notice that some reviewers point out "a damp smell " can't say we noticed that - perhaps they didn't see the swimming pool or the ice rink?

a three night stay at the Castle was divine, the rooms are well appointed, clean and spacious.
The meals provided in with the price were very well thought out, with local produce being used as much as possible.
The staff were very attentive, well trained and actually appeared to care, something very rare in chain hotels.
The Castle is run by the McMillan family, and you can definitely tell that they care. During our stay we met and spoke with Mr and Mrs McMillan senior, and Hamilton McMillan the manager.

Our party decided that when you think of staying at a nice posh hotel, this is how you imagine it to be.

one downside was that the hotel was a bit warm, necessitating the room window to be open all night, which was ok for me, but one of our party was a bit uncomfortable the first night.

Room Tip: Book direct and ask for a front facing room.
