My first visit to this hotel was 20 years ago and nothing has changed, rooms are in need of refurbish, menu is basic, the staff still wear pinnies.....only positive is the rooms are Wifi free.

A rare quality today but from the moment you enter the lobby you know service wont be compramised. The staff throughout the hotel goes the extra mile with passion to ensure there bit in making for a wonderful stayover.I had stayed at the castle in the past and wanted to share this experience with my partner so stayed over before catching the 9.30am ferry the next day. After a courtious check in our bags were taken to the room and the TV set turned on and readjusted without requesting. What is special and unique about this hotel is the Curling rink and the constant flurry of stones (kettles) on the ice, This activity will catch your eye and intreague as you sip pre dinner drinks amongs even more friendlier staff.
The 5 course dinner was beautifully presented again in full view of the curling and included seasonable dishes like Partridge and locally sourced produce . The standard room was large , comfortable, warm despite the cold wind outside and immaculate clean. We didnt avail of the gym or pool, just too taken with the competitivness of the curling.
Single occupancy at b&b rate of £45 is excellent value and if you opt for b,b &dinner at £62.50 (5 course) its even better. However double occupancy is double charge, so at £90 for the room including 2 breakfasts, the value diminishes. The breakfast was everything you would want to start a day and I will attempt to miss any evening sailing to avail of staying once again and experiencing this wonderful Scottish hospitality and charm.

Room Tip: Front of hotel offers limited views of the port.

Stayed here for a week while working in the area.Ok the hotel does seem a bit dated, however, the whole place was spotless.Every member of staff was polite ,courteous and only too happy to help in any way.The hotel overall is a credit to the owner and staff alike.curling rink wasn't open yet so didn't see it,but the swimming pool and gym were excellent.Only issue i had was the lack of free wi fi.This is available at a cost, but i didn't desperately need to use it.Food is excellent and from my experience is value for money.Around £23 for a 3 course meal followed by tea or coffee in a 4 star Hotel.Chefs obviously have a passion for the job judging by the quality of food .
Absolutely no hesitation in recommending the North West Castle and i will definately return.

Room Tip: Try and get a room at the front, with a view of the port and the ferries, although the ferry terminal...

Initially wanting to stay in Portpatrick in their chain of hotels, a lovely little unspoilt harbour, the price dictated,£58.00 pppn in Stranraer against £79.00 in Portpatrick where you can use the facilities,i.e the pool ,fitness suite at Stranraer.
In my opinion the Portpatrick hotel is in a nice position regarding views wise[providing you pay the extra for a harbour view]but apart from being in a prime position to the golf course]its a small place hotel wise and recent reviews ,well you can decide..
Needless to say we made the right choice, staying at the North West Castle, even though,we were dubious about the ferry traffick, noise[there was none].
Room we stayed in was back facing and i suppose acceptible, however my personal opinion was it over warm /stuffy ,you couldn,t control the temp.
Pool/sauna/fitness suite was good/.acceptable,some say it is outdated but it does the job as far as relaxing goes.
On a plus basis, the dining was exceptional, four course meals each night of fine dining ,pianist playing whilst eating,a nice touch.
Overall, would i recommend this place, yes as a stopover place.

When we have no babysitting at the weekend the cry is always the same. Where are we going? My wife and I decided to act on a recommendation we had from a lady we met in Peebles Hydro, another of the McMillan group, and head for the North West Castle.
First impressions were not good as we entered a dark dismal foyer and groped our way to reception. On reaching there we discovered the reason for the darkness - a mini power cut!
The room we were directed to was spacious, well fitted, two writing desks, two coffee tables and ample seating. The sea view description was slightly off as although we could see the loch and harbour we were looking directly into the rear of the police station. Nonethless a very comfortable room.
My wife tends to judge hotels by their evening meal and we were certainly not disappointed. My duck was cooked to perfection and my wife was full of praise for her sea bass. This set the trend for the remaining three nights we stayed with each meal presented to the same high standard.
All in we found the hotel very relaxing, every one of the staff friendly and chatty and while some areas need attention the whole decor in keeping with this type of hotel.
I found an earlier comment rather strange when it stated no one stayed for more than one night. Everyone we spoke to were staying a minimum two nights and like ourselves some a little longer.
Would I recommend it to a friend/, most certainly. Would I return? Well while it was a most enjoyable experience it is just a pity it is situated in Stranraer!

Room Tip: Ask for one of the smaller rooms to the North of the Hotel for better views

This hotel was really first class .It has a swimming pool etc.and has an ice rink which is used for curling.
The room we had was spacious(we paid a little extra for a front facing room) The staff were most helpful,The food was first class and the attention in the diningroom was excellent.
My wife and I would certainly tell our friends to try it.
