“Interesting place - quaint and charming”
Reviewed April 4, 2011

We were very pleased with our large, front-facing room in the North West Castle Hotel, which was spacious, clean and pleasant. We were just there for a night's stop-over, before continuing to Edinburgh for a few nights. I didn't get a chance to check out the restaurant which seems to have a good reputation.

While others have made a negative about the hotel being 'old fashioned', I found it to be quaint and charming - the antithesis of a chain hotel.

I would stay again in the North West Castle, and hopefully next time will try the restaurant.

...but let's start with the downsides. The decor may take you back to the seventies and the fixtures and fittings are in places rather worn or tired. The views, mainly of the Stena ferry terminal (due to move north to Cairnryan in late 2011) aren't too inspiring. The bedrooms, though perfectly adequate, have beds that are are a bit on the small side and there are blankets rather than duvets. It would be good if the wifi was free.

However, there are real compensations. The location is very handy for the centre of town, just a five minute walk away, and there's excellent road access. The public spaces are comfortably furnished and the whole hotel is spotlessly clean. There's a swimming pool and, over the winter season, the curling rink is in use.

There were some outstanding features. The staff were unfailingly friendly and helpful. The food in the evening was really something to look forward to. The menu is sensibly short and the standard of cooking and presentation was very high indeed, vastly better than most hotels in this price range or indeed several steps above it. And the value for money for dinner, bed and breakfast was quite outstanding.

For us, and for those in our group, these plus points more than outweighed the negatives and yes, we shall be paying a return visit.

A wonderfully old-fashioned hotel with an excellent dining room and friendly staff. Most rooms have been modernised in recent years, although the cold weather over Christmas defeated the central heating system (soon rectified with an electric heater). Hotel also boasts its own curling rink, where you may practice Scotland’s “roaring game”, and a swimming pool with small gymnasium. A great place at Christmas when games and competitions are organised, but also for a summer or winter break with walks in the area – try the coastal path from Stranraer to Cairnryan or the walk from Stranraer to Portpatrick. Regular bus services back to Stranraer. Golf packages also available - although that's not for me. Really must try the NWC for New Year.

On the down side, television reception is erratic at best – bring your own radio if you really do need canned entertainment.

Stayed here a few times. Always really good service, nice, clean room. Great food. Its got a swimming pool, sauna and ice rink - how unique. The hotel is quite dated - not in a dirty unkempt way, just in a decor way, but I really like it, if that makes sense !! Try it out and see - less than £70 per night.

This hotel looks very grand from the entrance and is spotlessly clean. The Reception staff were polite, professional and organised a porter to show us to our rooms and help with luggage. My room was large, though a bit dated - nevertheless clean and tidy and the bathroom was good size with decent shower/bath. We ate in the restaurant for dinner which was very nice with varied choice, the service and attention of the staff could not be faulted and the pianist in the background added a different dimension. Similarly breakfast was to a high quality again served efficiently and made a refreshing change to the typical buffet style breakfast served in most larger hotels. I would definitely stay again and my title is not detrimental my impression of the hotel... perhaps some hotels have become too modern and lost the customer service focus.

This hotel is almost a step back in time. They have a very strong emphasis on cleandliness and staff service which could not be faulted. Lovely food in resteraunt and quite reasonable bar/wine prices. While the bedrooms are somewhat dated and the matress on the uncomfortable side of very hard, the hotel is well worth a vist for a traveller, business stop or tourist.

If I am back in Stranraer again I will certainly stay here.
