“An old fashioned garden and woodland”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

Less well known and smaller than Logan, but an interesting mixture of formal walled garden, old greenhouses and woodland walks. A lovely peaceful spot with plenty of seats to admire the views and to relax.

“tearoom disappointing”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

This place has such potential but could do with a revamp to make the most of its assets. Food is OK, soup lovely and tray bakes looked yum. The place was busy too BUT it would be so much better with table cloths, table service and getting rid of the dreadful mural. It could make the most of its interesting dairy history and create a bit more atmosphere. The gift shop is simply dreadful.

“Stunning garden...”
Reviewed August 31, 2012 via mobile

This garden is wonderful . There is a treasure trove of plants . The planting ranges from semi formal to woodland.
The walk to the Loch is fabulous.
If you have the eyes to see them there are many usual and exciting plants. The Head gardener is passionate and knowledgeable. She is to be congratulated on her Herculean work load! And still time to share some of her enthusiasm with visitors. This is a real garden showing signs of love and thought! Who needs perfect tidiness?
A garden is about gentle chaos and freedom not tight manicuring! Mirabel Osler would approve.
For those who get easily bored with plants the maze is fun!
The glasshouses are some of the best we have seen holding some real treasures!
Always good to come away from a garden feeling you have learned a few new things.
It is indeed a gem and Gabby(the Gardener) is to be hugely congratulated

“Horticulture, heritage and unanswered questions”
Reviewed August 31, 2012

We passed an enjoyable couple of hours wandering around the walled gardens, admiring the Victorian greenhouses, exploring the specimen trees and getting lost in the maze. At £13 for a family of four, this seemed reasonable value. The tea shop was nice, but slightly pricier.

What was missing was an explanation of what was, or had been Dunskey House, whose gardens these quite clearly are. Indeed, the way that a visitor attraction has been created that does not offer up a single view of the sizable house is quite an achievement. Feeling frustrated at the lack of an explanatory board, I Googled, and quickly learned that this has been the home of the Orr-Ewing family, since 1901, the current head of which served as Lord Lieutenant of Wigtownshire in recent years. Even so, I would have loved while I was there to have learned a little of the story of the garden and the family who call it home.

“Pleasant way to pass an hour.”

A nice little stop off en route to Port Patrick. Pleasant gardens, lovely woodland walk - all a teeny bit unkempt. Coffee shop ok but service friendly.
