“First Class everything!”

We stayed at the Fernhill Hotel between Xmas and New Year's eve. We could not fault the place. The bedrooms were a lovely size and very comfortable and clean. Best of all, the service, from reception to the restaurant was exceptional. Everybody was professional and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Highly recommended. Definitely one to return to.
The food was absolutely delicious and the deal we got was over and above worth the money.

Could not have asked for a more comfortable place to have a weeks break. Great food, good people and fantastic scenery. 5* service for an affordable price. Great location to base yourself to see the surrounding area. Will visit again!

Room Tip: Ask for a Sea view

Although we have not stayed at the hotel as we have a caravan close by we have dined there on several occasions. The fantastic view over the harbour of Portpatrick is worth the walk up the hill and the experience is enhanced by quality of the food and the service. Top of the hill. Top class retaurant.

We have just spent a really lovely short break, special deal, in the Fernhill hotel - a wonderful location, spacious, comfortable room, delicious food and delightful staff ! This Hotel is situated in the lovely little village of Portpatrick and the views of the harbour from the Hotel are truly marvellous.

Just spent five nights at the Fernhill Hotel, Portpatrick and had a wonderful stay. Portpatrick is so pretty and this hotel takes full advantage, being on the hill above the harbour and with wonderful views from front facing bedrooms and all public rooms. The room was elegant and comfortable, the staff are delightful, but the piece de resistance is the food. We knew we were on to a winner when, on the first night, we were offered an amuse bouche before dinner. From then on, dinner was the highlight of our day and breakfasts were equally good.

Highly recommended

Room Tip: Make sure you get a front facing room

We stayed at the Fernhill Hotel having found it on the interweb and consulted Trip Advisor. We stayed on a DBB package for 3 nights for the cost of 2 which meant that for a sensible price we had the best room in the hotel (room 15 for anyone who needs to know). The staff are all welcoming (including sherry on arrival), the room was large, quiet with a superb view over Port Partrick. It also has an enormous bathroom! The food was excellent and the restaurant staff equally so giving the impression that anything you wanted was no problem - and indeed we had no problems. We also liked the attention to detail in the restaurant - the exact lining up of the cutlery, glasses and chairs for the next sitting. We have no hesitation in recommending this hotel.

Room Tip: Room 15 we found relaxing. Can't speak for any others.

The hotel has three great strengths: (i) the food; (ii) the staff; and (iii) the view. There must be a top-quality chef in the kitchen to consistently turn out such delicious well-presented fare (although sadly let down by the coffee which was rarely hot enough either at dinner or at breakfast. Individual cafetières would add an inexpensive embellishment to what is otherwise a top quality meal).

The friendliness of the staff stood out, the welcoming drink, the offer to help with luggage and overall courteous willingness to make one's stay a pleasant one are all features that commend the place. The staff seemed genuinely proud of the hotel. Carolyn is a gem.

The setting on the side of a steep hill, looking over the old harbour and across to the other side of the valley has to be seen (make sure your room has a harbour view). There are plenty of walks, several gardens to visit, a wreck to visit below the cliff 3 miles away and a disused railway to discover.

As with any place, there were niggles, but don't let them put you off. If you are allocated a table in the conservatory, rather than the dining room it can tend to echo. So parties with children can be rather intrusive, as also the persistent Celtic Muzak. If you can get a table in the dining room (you keep the same table throughout your stay) you will find it preferable. The bar has a welcoming gas coal fire but a very unwelcoming noisy dishwasher behind the bar which made a continuous grinding sound (we were told it was for washing glasses).

All in all a wonderful visit.

Room Tip: Insist on a first floor room with a harbour view as far away as possible from the cleaners' cupb...
