I feel bad about giving only a 4 not a 5 since most things about Knockinaam Lodge are wonderful, but though it's only a small gripe it;s something so unnecessary that they deserve to lose a mark for it.
At £165 a night for single occupancy db&b it's pretty pricey, but the hotel itself is very attractive, the location is amazing, the beds were comfortable and the food excellent, so I wouldn't begrudge paying it. But at that price I think it's petty cheese-paring to charge extra for serving you a cup of tea in the lounge when you come back from a walk. I'd have let them of with a grumble and no deducted mark if they'd provided tea/coffee making facilities in the bedroom, but they don't.
But if you don't like afternoon tea or coffee, or aren't bothered by that sort of thing, then its a pretty perfect kind of a place. We had a (fish eating) semi veggie in our little group and they did a pretty good job of providing as interesting a menu for her as they did for us carnivores. The menu is fixed, and although hey said they could make substitutes if there was anything we didn't like, we never felt the need to over 3 successive dinners. Though I would echo the previous comment about the wine being pricey. Luckily the house red was very good and a snip at £24!
The staff were all competent and friendly without being intrusive.

Through Stranraer and down a long winding road to Knockinaam, sitting in a broad lawn, with private beach, and hemmed in by cliffs. A warm welcome at reception, and a nicely decorated room with large bathroom in the country house style. Then a trip into the comfortable lounge, complete with log fire, tea , coffee and excellent shortbread.
Dinner was first class, from the little cod balls to accompany drinks, to the Luce Bay sea bass , with a super beef dish, followed by Passion Fruit souffle and sorbet. Extensive wine list, if a little pricey.
Outstanding breakfast, followed off by a tour round the garden , and taking the air on the beach.
A really relaxing stop, and one to be repeated.

Fabulous location, delicious food, friendly and professional staff and very comfortable room. We had two nights here for a weekend break and enjoyed everything about it. Would love to go back in the summer but enjoyed the drama of being there on a stormy winter weekend.

We visited on Valentines weekend , we were only people in dining room & we were given a table facing onto the sea . Fabulous view as we ate a fabulous lunch . This was our second visit & we were not disappointed .A small point was that our coats were only taken from us when we asked , after being seated for a while in a lovely lounge . We were made to feel very welcome & food was of a high standard .

As a treat after Christmas we decided to have an D/B/B and Knockinaam Lodge who's food was recommended by the Sunday times.
Lovely setting, comfortable Hotel, nice people. Nice room but no towels - phoned reception- towels arrived. No soap ! - phoned reception - got soap.
Dinner superb untill the duck - nicely pink but very tough with wet rubbery skin. Mentioned this to very nice waitress who offered a sharper knife. Fabulous souffle and the best cheese board my husband has ever had. I was kindly given a recipe fot the sorbet I admired
Would I go back or recommend it ? I don't know. A one star meal should be perfect - it wasn't.
For the price the Hotel should have been perfect - it wasn't and has left me feeling disconcerted .So much was superb but attention to detail was lacking and having read the wonderfull reviews I feel hard done by that I did not have the same experience.

I arranged a family get together at Knockinaam and it was nothing short of superb. The location is stunning, the hunting lodge is beautifully kept, the staff are incredibly accommodating and the food is amazing. We booked a number of rooms and all of them had their own individual personality and charm. The pictures on their website really don't do them justice. It can be difficult to serve a large group for dinner at the same time but Knockinaam did a wonderful job - and at breakfast too. I loved the bar with the wood paneling, open fire and extensive selection of whiskeys. Also watching the sun set over the gardens and beach was a real treat too. We all felt very spoiled. Thanks Knockinaam for an unforgettable experience.
