Knockinaam Lodge is situated as far west in the south of Scotland as it is possible to go without falling into the sea. You reach it by driving down a very bumpy, narrow lane which seems to be leading nowhere until you turn a corner and there,in front of you, is this splendid house with lawns reaching out to the beach and the Irish Sea.It really is a wonderful location and the welcoming hotel does not disappoint. Most of the accomodation looks out over the ocean and is spacious and comfortable. It is magical to fall asleep with the sound of the waves breaking onto the nearbye beach. On a clear day you can see over to Northern Ireland, to Belfast and the Antrim Hills.
The food is superb and served in an elegant dining room by friendly, courteous staff. After dinner there is a cosy bar area in which to relax with your coffee or one of the many, many whiskeys on offer. The friendly owners are often about to ensure that you have everything you need and are being well looked after.
We first discovered this gem when we were travelling to Belfast by ferry from Cairnryan and it is very convenient for this seaport and for Stranraer. There are some stunning gardens open to the public within easy reach of the hotel and the staff are most helpful in providing information about the local area.
If you are looking for a superbly situated, out of the way, comfortable and comforting hotel, serving excellent food, then look no further.

Room Tip: We stayed in Whin the first time and in South most recently and both rooms overlooked the sea and were very warm and comfortable.

From the moment you arrive at this location, you know that you have chanced upon a special hotel. Located on the south-west coast of Scotland, just across the water from Ireland, this beautiful hotel is ideally situated to provide an atmosphere of peace and seclusion. The staff are friendly and courteous without being intrusive. The surrounding countryside is ideal for walking and the hotel also caters for dogs, so there is no need to leave your pet at home. From the garden, a couple of steps takes you down to the beach, and there is a cliff walk which takes you to Port Patrick.
The interior of the Lodge maintains an air of quaint old-fashioned elegance. During our stay the ten rooms were fully booked, yet peace and calm reigned and the staff were unobtrusive as they went about their duties. The housekeeping was done quietly and efficiently and could not be faulted.
The meals were absolutely wonderful and each course surpassed the previous one. I feel I am not really doing this hotel justice by my description. Maybe it is just one of those places that you have to experience for yourself.

Room Tip: If you want to take your dog, make sure you say so on booking as not all rooms are available for dogs. Also, dogs are not allowed in main part of the hotel.

What an excellent hotel this is. Every aspect is a treat: the location , the hotel itself inside and out is beautifully maintained, the food is wonderful and the staff endlessly helpful, polite and friendly. One really couldnt ask for more!
Having stayed in five star hotels throughout the world we found this to be up there with the best of them and better than some. We thought the pricing was absolutely correct and would have happily paid more. Well done to the proprietors. They have a hotel to be proud of.

We returned to Knockinaam for our third and now annual visit (3 nights) and as expected found everything entitely to our satisfaction. Some warmth in the spring sunshine was all that was missing! The food and service is simply superb and we cannot rate this hotel highly enough. Many thanks to all the staff who make our stay so special. We will be back!

Staff pleasant, beautiful room, house and setting, but the food was disappointingly overrated. My partner is vegetarian and for the £58 received a cous cous stuffed pepper as a main. Had rather hoped that a michelin starred restaurant could offer something more interesting for the price. Or lower the price. Quite used to this happening so had called in advance to ask if we could get some idea as to what he would be served but was told chefs just decide on the day, no previous menus offered. Dining room so hushed that to have mentioned would have made a scene. Fine food for meat eaters but if you are veggie I wouldn't bother dining here.
