“Awe Inspiring Location”
Reviewed January 1, 2013

Without the welcoming signage, it is unlikely you would find the hotel, on the first attempt. The location is breathtaking and far from the "beaten track". The Cliff Walk on a windswept winter day is truly memorable, as is the hotel and it's wonderful, local staff. A warm welcome is given to visitors,by "Scott", who is a true delight. The public rooms are comfortable and pleasurable for a quiet drink or a read of your favourite book. Bedrooms have all the required amenities and the bathroom, like wise. The restaurant, is not the finest room in the Lodge, which is a pity. But the staff could not be faulted. The set dinner menu, on two nights, was consistent and fulfilling. The choices were "safe", well cooked and presented, but perhaps not showing the flair and exuberance, you might expect from an establishment nearto "Michelin" stars...... A very enjoyable stay AND A FINE BREAKFAST.

Room Tip: If you go in winter, the sea-view rooms are not necessarily worth paying the extra for.

We stayed here earlier in the year and were bowled over by the attentive staff and location. From the moment of arrival to the end of our stay, nothing was a problem to the staff. My husband is not a meat lover and we were delighted at our first dinner when he was presented, without any fuss, with a menu similar to mine but containing a different list of dished specifically for him! The same thing occurred on our second evening. The food was delicious, servings adequate especially with the number of courses served. Breakfast was another delight with plenty of choices.
The rooms are well decorated with everything you require. The location of the hotel, in its own little bay, was worth the journey down the rough track and the views were magical.
All in all worth a visit and we certainly will be back!

Knockinaam Lodge is a delightful Scottish house with charming staff and delicious food; we had a really good night here. The staff were very welcoming when we arrived and asked us if there was anything they could get us after they'd shown us to our room. We said we fancied a sandwich and we'd order when we came downstairs; however, after looking at the bar menu we decided to have the goat's cheese with caramelised onions on puff pastry. It was really good, especially with a glass of the house Bordeaux.

Dinner was described as a tasting menu; it amounted to a four course menu with no choice although we were advised if there was anything we didn't like we could have something else. The food was really good, with tasty sauces and well prepared dishes. I did find the portions very small and after the meal I was not completely full which was a little disappointing for a £58 dinner. For me, a tasting menu should be at least two more courses than this, otherwise it's just a normal menu with small portions and no choice. My main course of cannon of lamb was not more than two ounces in weight with a piece of carrot and some mashed potato and a couple of other garnishes. I feel sorry I have to mention this as the meal really was excellent in every other way.

My other big negative was the temperature of the hotel; it was cold when we arrived at one thirty in the afternoon and only one fire had just been lit. I had a thick pullover on and I was still very cool. We ascertained that they'd been closed the night before so I wondered if that was the reason. When we went back to our room I had a bath to warm up a bit. Two other guests remarked to each other about how chilly they were and that they were surprised the second fire hadn't been lit. When we came down for dinner we were pleased to see a match had been put to the other fire and the rooms were much warmer. Once again, it's a shame to have to mention this but it was mid-December and I would expect to be warm in a Travelodge where I would be paying a lot less for the room.

Breakfast was a really nice start to the day with freshly squeezed orange juice, hot bread, croissant and toast, home-made jam and marmalade and an extensive menu including kidneys and a couple of other interesting and very tempting choices. Service was attentive and efficient as it had been throughout the hotel during our stay.

Knockinaam is not the best value in the world, mainly due to the reasons above but it is a nice location and a good hotel.

We gave a five star review when we stayed in July 2007, having stayed there many times before and have returned again and again.

We have also recommended Knockinaam to many friends over the years.

From experience, a valued and good customer is often appreciated and is offered a complimentary room upgrade or a complimentary drink by the owners from time to time - it does not cost a lot to them but it means a lot to us. Knockinaam has never offered us anything - oh well, you cannot win them all and we just have to go with the flow.

We stayed there again in November 2011, on our way home to Ireland from a shooting trip in Scotland. After checking in and getting sorted out, we went down to the bar and ordered two glasses of champagne to enjoy, whilst studying the menu. As usual, some nuts, crisps and olives arrived, followed by some amuses bouches.

We ordered dinner and, as there was a bit of a delay, asked for two more glasses of champagne and for a few crisps to accompany the champagne. They arrived, we thought no more of it and we had a very good dinner.

We had to leave before breakfast to catch the ferry home - there was no reduction for not having breakfast - fair enough - the rate is inclusive but it was not until we got home that we looked at the bill in more detail and saw that we had been charged A POUND, yes A POUND for the small dish of 6 to 8 crisps that had accompanied our second glass of champagne.

We just could not believe it but, as a result, we shall NEVER return to Knockinaam Lodge again - it may be a very small thing but we just felt cheated.

Thankfully, Glenapp Castle, which also has a Michelin star, is not far away and there we have been given room upgrades, complimentary drinks, a complimentary CD of Scottish music and a complimentary book - it is good that some places do appreciate their loyal customers.

Superb location, very quiet and peaceful. Lovely grounds to stroll around and lots of lovely walking opportunities. Secluded cove with views across to Ireland.
This small hotel is very intimate. We stayed in 'Pond' as we were able to take our dog with us. The room was lovely, beautifully furnished and had a huge bathroom with bath and separate shower. All very tastefully decorated.
The food, which is one of our main reasons for choosing a particular hotel, was superb. Dinner was a 'tasting menu'. Each evening we were asked if everything on the menu was ok for us as the chef would happily offer an alternative if there was someone we didn't like or couldn't eat. In the event, during our three night stay, there was nothing on the menu that we didn't thoroughly enjoy. The languistine risotto was superb, as was the fillet steak.
Breakfast was excellent also, with all the usual choices available and homemade marmalade and jam.
The staff are very friendly and do an excellent job.

Very enjoyable 2 night stay. Beautiful spot, lovely hotel, great service. Expensive, but not unduly so for food and service of this standard, worth every penny. Wi Fi in drawing room only but fast and reliable.

Outstanding location, Beautiful sunsets with Ireland on the horizon..The service was excellent. The food was magnificent. We will definitely be going there again. There are many things to see in the area including Castle Kennedy Gardens and the Mull Of Galloway with it's magnificent views of England, Scotland, Ireland and the Isle of Man, but you needn't go anywhere to have a lovely time.
