Owner description: Formerly known as the Castle of Glooms, this castle is beautifully sited upon a narrow bridge overlooked by the Ochil Hills. The 15th century fortress of Castle Campbell is dramatically situated above Dollar Glen. The oldest part is a well-preserved 15th century tower around which other buildings were constructed, including an unusual loggia. Castle Campbell was once the home of the powerful Campbell earls of Argyll, and has connections with historical figures such as John Knox and Mary Queen of Scots. Open all year. “Wonderful Place”
Reviewed March 17, 2013

This is a must if around the Dollar/Stirling area.

Really lovely castle in lovely grounds known as the Dollar Glen. There is a great walk to the castle via two walkways by the river or you can walk where the cars go.

The views on the way are superb but once up in the castle it gets a lot better with great views across the Glen & neighbouring mountains. The castle itself is in good condition with access to the roof if needed & the staff are very friendly & knowledgeable.

Please look at my pictures as there is a very helpful tip in one of them. If walking you will come to two sign posts saying the same thing. The left hand side is the walk to the castle. The walkways are quite tricky & are only for people with the right gear on & it is also very steep in certain places & get quite close to the river but i would recommend it as it has superb views. The right hand side is the more easier car route.

“An Enjoyment”
Reviewed December 9, 2012

Has a great time visiting the castle but then I am very much into Scottish History. It was a pity about the weather (rained all day what we Scots say small rain) but I hope to visit again in 2013

“Rugged Scotland at its best”
Reviewed November 23, 2012

Set amongst the Ochil Hills Castle Campbell is well worth a visit. It is great to see in Spring, Summer and Autumn. The walks around the castle are great and the views outstanding. I would wear a good pair of walking shoes.

I would reccommend using the car park at the bottom of the hill and walking up, although hard work the views are wonderful and you don't have the trouble of navigating the single track road up and down with other drivers, looked quite terrifying and very glad we didn't attempt it!

This is a Historic Scotland property, photos allowed and if enjoying the walks, allow a full day for this one :)

“Castle tucked on a cliff edge”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

Fantastic little castle looming over the village of Dollar. Relaxing place to picnic in the summer but atmospheric anytime. Beautiful gardens and outstanding views far to the south with enticing walks up the Ochils hills to the rear. car drive to front door if disabled or car park 100yds or so. Fabulous circular walk up through the glen from dollar if preferred, easy enough taking about 20 minutes up and same back. This is a great day out with great team room in village after.
