Owner description: Formerly known as the Castle of Glooms, this castle is beautifully sited upon a narrow bridge overlooked by the Ochil Hills. The 15th century fortress of Castle Campbell is dramatically situated above Dollar Glen. The oldest part is a well-preserved 15th century tower around which other buildings were constructed, including an unusual loggia. Castle Campbell was once the home of the powerful Campbell earls of Argyll, and has connections with historical figures such as John Knox and Mary Queen of Scots. Open all year. Winter closed Thurs and Fri

We visited Castle Campbell on a whim, because a friend claimed to be related to the Campbell family. I am so glad that we made the effort to find it.
The castle stands majestically on a hill above Dollar Glen.
The road to the castle is difficult to find. It is narrow and has a stone wall running along the side of the road near the entrance. The entrance to the road is clearly marked "Castle Road".
We were lost driving up a road that appeared to lead to the castle. We must not have been alone in our mistake, because when we stopped to ask directions, a man on the street told us that he is asked at least once a day how to get to the castle.
You drive part way up the hill to a parking lot, then you must walk the rest of the way to the castle, so be prepared for a bit of a hike.
The castle has placards to explain the history of the castle. The views of the town are magnificent.
I would highly recommend making a visit to this castle, if you have a car to get around.

The Campbell Castle near Dollar, Scotland, is loaded with history, and is not far from the main highway that goes to St. Andrews. To get to it you must take a narrow road that has room for one car, but there are occasional turnouts in case someone is coming from the other direction. From the parking lot you have a 10-minute walk to the castle. While the castle is not ornate, the views from atop it are stunning. The Campbell clan obtained the castle through a marriage to a Stewart lass. My wife has Campbell blood, and I Stewart, so we had fun finding out that we represent seven centuries of harmony between the clans. Take the time to see this castle.

This castle had the most stunning views. Would be a wonderful setting for a spring wedding. A must see while in Scotland. There is a hike involved so be prepared with water and hiking shoes.

Below The Ochil Hills stands Castle Campbell, the chief lowland stronghold of the Campbell clan. It's a pleasant walk up the wooded glen. If you go beyond the castle, there are terrific views across the Firth of Forth and the town of Dollar.

The beauty starts at the bottom of the Dollar Glen with the walk through the glen up to the Castle - it should not be missed. My husband and I were married in this Castle so it has special associations for us.
