“Visit to the Royal Hotel in Tyndrum”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 6, 2013

Arrived home from our visit to this wonderful hotel for a five night holiday with Highland Heritage.
Contrary to a recent report I had read, we found the whole holiday a real treat, from the moment we were met by John our driver at Gretna the whole treat started ( also Stuart for two days ).
The welcome from Alex and his very polite and helpful staff was a pleasure.
Cleanliness a priority which we were very pleased with.
The food was truly excellent as was the service. We found Alex to be a very polite and helpful manager as was his assistant.
Bedroom fine, bathroom a tad small but enough to freshen up after a long day out.
Travel does need explaining to the customer as we were transported to Gretna by another courier, who in our opinion were not up to the standard of the Highland Heritage coaches or drivers. A long day in traveling but it does not take away the enjoyment we have had.
I had made contact with the owner of Highland Heritage, Ian over another comment I had read on this page.
Ian reassured me that if there had been a problem with this holiday then he would personally look in to any complaint I might of had.
No need Ian, we had a wonderful time, thank you.

Room Tip: Any person with climbing of stairs request a ground floor room.

Just returned from our first trip to Scotland, and Highland Heritage. Loved every minute of it. Alex was welcoming as were the staff, and contrary to people spouting on about the anti-bacterial hand cleansers in hotel and coaches, my husband and I thought it an excellent idea. You have got anybody and everybody touching door handles and the like, so well done! The room we were in was really comfortable albeit the bathroom was a tad on the small side but you dont live in it and it didnt bother us. The only downside is unfortunately it takes a long time to travel also you are allocated seat numbers to travel on...you change seats on every trip then end up on your origional one to go home which caused bit of a scene on our way home. All in all great holiday.

Enjoyment of many holidays depends on expectations. When we booked our 6 day (5 night) holiday based at this hotel we did not expect wall-to-wall sunshine; 20C plus every day; no rain and clear skies. Nor, from reading previous Trip Advisor reviews were we expecting the superb level of service by cheerful, intelligent young waiters and waitresses. Admittedly we were expecting to hear Scottish accents, especially from the manager but it mattered not. Nor were we expecting the excellent choice of food for both breakfast and evenings given the cost of the holiday. Again, judging from some earlier reviews we were not expecting the good quality of 2nd floor room with its en-suite bath/shower and fine views from the window. There was a slight problem with adjustment of the shower taps (a notice warning that the water is very hot doesn't solve the problem!).

Lifts worked; entertainment was provided - and very good it was on the first and last nights whilst on other nights there was chance to talk. As far as the coaches and trips were concerned - we were expecting to spend long periods on the coach given the distances travelled though for the most part the drivers provided entertaining commentaries and awful jokes to add to the interest. We visited Oban and had a sea cruise;a "free day" with optional tour; Loch Lomond and the Trossachs (with a lake cruise) and Fort William - a day which included an afternoon of Scottish entertainment before return to the hotel, compared by the owner of Highland Heritage. The days are highly organised - which we expected - and yes if you weren't expecting all your time to be occupied there was a sense of "boot-camp" about it - which we found amusing. After all there isn't a great deal to do in Tyndrum other than a worthwhile walking game of find the railway station. (Upper Tyndrum - linking to Fort William has a bronze award and feels like something out of the "Railway Children". Lower Tyndrum links to Oban and on the "optional" tour day we used our senior rail cards to visit Oban - travelling a delightful single track route in the company of a full coach of excited Charity cyclists up for the week-end.)
We were not unduly surprised to find the clientele was a notable demonstration of "grey power"
- this is not really a holiday for pre-retirement - and for the targeted market it "ticks most of the boxes".

Is there an obsession with cleaning hands - possibly; but if you already have a cough for example washing hands isn't likely to cure it - and moving back 3 seats each new day still places you in front of the cougher much of the time.

Be realistic about your expectations, I say. Our expectations, based on reading trip advisor reviews were more than surpassed. Well done Alex; well done the un-named chef; and very well done to whoever provides/cares for the many colourful plants scattered around. If we were to do this holiday again we would probably opt for the Oban hotel which sits in a superb position on the sea front.

If I dare offer a thought to owner, Mr Cleaver, it would be to focus on what he does best ( being a sound entrepreneur) and leave the compering and jokes to those who do that best....

Room Tip: Rooms on the second floor are quiet with good views and lifts

First time on a Highland Heritage holiday break taken in May 2013. (4 nights - 5 days)

Joined at Blackburn on a link coach up to Tebay services then transferred to a Highland Heritage coach (which was more comfortable) for the remainder of the journey up to the hotel set in the Trossachs. (Reverse of this on the way back home).

Met by the manager on arrival who explained about meal times, bar times and facilities. Allocated a room in the annexe off the main bar area - comfortable room with all amenities provided - ground floor only. Clean and tidy and maid services daily.

Dining room was comfortable but large seating around (I think 200) but very well organised and service was excellent. You cannot enter the dining room without first cleansing your hand with a foam hand cleanser (nor get on the coach) they are absolutely fanatical about this.

Meals were of a good standard and varied and you are allocated a table on arrival which remains yours for the duration of your stay.

There is entertainment every night - but apart from the first and last night was geared towards the over 90's. We went out the local pub on one night and went to the sister hotel next door (Ben Doran) because of the type of entertainment offered.

Drinks in the bar very reasonably priced and bottles of wine at a tenner (damned good value for a hotel, which allows you to have a little more wine than you might at normal hotel prices of around £17 or £18 a bottle).

Took 3 trips out (2 included and the optional one).
1) Oban and the Sound of Mull boat trip - enjoyable but weather not so good - but didn't rain.

2) Optional Trip to Isle of Bute (extra cost) - Great day out visited Mount Stewart - very impressive - escorted by the house manager - very informative and enthusiastic (NO photos allowed). Had some time in Rothesay. Weather absolutely brilliant.

3) Trip to Fort William - Excellent trip - scenery spectacular up through Glen Coe. Concert in Fort William was OK with a local band who were very good. Highland dancing was performed by a young girl of 10 or 11 years old.

They have a rule on the coaches where you move back down the coach each day by several rows so that people at the rear of the coach end up near the front and vice versa works quite well and no-one complained.

Staff very helpful and polite (mostly foreign but with good English).

All in all a good experience and at £180 pp for a 4 night stay good value for money.

Will certainly consider it again for a short break holiday.

Room Tip: Visit the Green Wellie for shopping in Tyndrum then the Pub.

Room terrible, ensuite tiny with sink outside, food 3rd. rate, entertainment 2nd. rate, lounges
needed a good update. The food was just piled on the plate and looked very unapetising. The coaches were not too comfortable and the drivers frequently played unwanted cd's. Everything seemed to be very regimented and more like a holiday camp. Would never travel with them again. I did complain to the owner afterwards about various unsatisfactory things but did not get any satisfaction. My advice, ask lots of questions before you book.. .

Room Tip: Have it described. Was supposed to be an upgrade, Find out which floor it is on. small lift

Everything was good except the room. The bedding was tatty and should be replaced, it was at least clean. The sink next to the bed was dreadful and is a definite NO NO. The so called Bathroom was no more than a cupboard with a toilet and a shower in a box and was very clostrophobic. There was nowhere to put toiletries etc except on the dressing table

Arrived at the hotel from Sheffield after a 10and a half hour drive , shattered. The hotel is average ,kept clean and warm .food was great ,hot and well presented. The staff were very friendly and pleasant. The tours were very good made all the better by our driver Stevie who was very informative of the area and a jolly chap he is.Then 11hours back home.

Room Tip: Try to get a low floor if you are an older traveller , lift not trustworthy.
