“Wonderful little hotel”
Reviewed July 27, 2013

This is a wonderful little hotel in the tiny village of Luss on the west side of Loch Lomond. The hotel was closed for 2 years and completely refurbished opening only 9 months before our stay. We stayed in the Murray (3rd-top floor) and MacPhearson (second floor above reception) rooms. Both rooms were small but nicely appointed with very comfortable beds and new bathroom fixtures. The location was great, far enough off the main highway to avoid the noise and only a 1 block walk to the quaint little village of Luss. Another highlight was the restaurant. I started with a delicious Cullen Skink soup (the best of many I tasted throughout Scotland) and had a peat smoked haddock over leeks and potatoes for main. Overall our party of 4 felt our meal at Loch Lomond Arms was the best we had in 2-1/2 weeks of touring through Scotland, including many more highly rated restaurants. This is a great hotel and very good value.

**This review reflects eating at this establishment and not a stay in the hotel**

Four of us had lunch here for the first time since last year's refurbishment. While the decor is nice, the outside tables sun basked in this uncommonly hot and sunny July and the venue a huge improvement on the old Colquhoun Arms, the quality of the service and the food is not in the same league as the surroundings.

My £8 prawn sandwich had the tiniest smidgen of salad and a teaspoon of coleslaw. It was a far cry from what the menu-speak had described and the price had suggested. A side of chips, c.£2.50, amounted to what must have been six, maybe seven chips in a tiny, albeit cute, little basket. My partner's macaroni was absolutely tasteless and devoid of flavour and seasoning. I wasn't sure you could get macaroni so wrong given that it is a pub-food staple, but seemingly you can here. Mustard, Chef?

The grilled goat’s cheese salad was perhaps the poorest. It was a circle of goats cheese in breadcrumb which looked like it hadn't been anywhere near a grill. Perhaps the 'grilling' was just more menu-speak for 'we're going to take this frozen little wheel of cheese (which looks like it's straight from 3663 or Brakes) and dunk it in the deep-fat fryer'. The accompanying salad was saturated in some form of dressing and glaze to a point that a Vileda Supermop would have struggled to contain it. As it was already swimming, perhaps it would have been better for all concerned if the poor little wheel of cheese had just grasped its opportunity and floated off into the distance.

As for the service, the staff we encountered were pleasant but delivering our dishes from the kitchen was the last contact we had. No staff appeared during or after our meal. Not to ask if we wanted more drinks, not to ask if everything was okay, not to up-sell us dessert or coffee and certainly not to provide or be asked for the bill. These are (incredibly) basic dining service standards. We waited a while then traipsed indoors to find someone to settle-up with.

Overall, this was a poor dining experience. It felt like we were paying a premium for the recent paint job and not for the quality of the food being served or for the standard of service.

The problem here is a simple one. Expectations. The surroundings heighten expectations. The refurbished venue heightens expectations. The high prices heighten expectations. As it stands, the quality of food and service cannot meet those expectations and the Loch Lomond Arms sinks under their weight. The place looks genuinely lovely but as a dining experience, this visit was exceptionally poor value for money.

I apologise if the foregoing seems harsh but I was extremely disappointed by my visit to the point of writing a review of a dining experience. Something I have never done before.

Lovely four poster bed, beautiful and spacious room, free wifi, great location in a very pretty little village. Reception staff quite friendly but use bar staff for relief and do not think they are trained for that job.

Stayed here only one night and we were given a really fantastic room with four poster cover. reasoanble view. Nice old fashioned bathroom. Having said this the hotel was quite pricey for what it was but we had a good night's rest and the location was excellent for our travels.

A very fast drive up from Birmingham had us arrive at Loch Lomond by 7.30pm on a Friday evening,we drove around the border of the lake and was not enticed by any B&B or Hotel until we found The Arms Hotel on a splinter road signposted Luss.............located in a good vantage point directly on the main road with a large private car park.We enquired if they had rooms and were fortunate to secure their last one,a nice double with four poster bed antique furnishing and very nicely appointed with en-suite,the room was spotless with a view to the Loch close by.We made a quick change and headed down to the restaurant in the bar area and was seated quickly. Our server Edyta I think was from Poland and was charming, the daily specials were listed and were the usual favourites of the region......we ordered a bottle of Marques de Gouline and for starters we chose Gravalax salmon and local scallops followed by A lovely Rack of Lamb tender and juicy together with their Braised Venison which was delicious, not to miss out we added a side of local cut fries, all this for around US $100.00,great value, although we were tired we managed to try some rarer single Malt Whiskies and retired with happy smiles.Breakfast was included and was well presented and served quickly and piping hot,the portions were more than generous and included haggis, delicious.Overall we could not fault the place definitely somewhere to book and enjoy and our room which we enjoyed so much was number 1...........................please tell me if you also enjoy your stay,I will definately return whenever in that part of the world again.

We stayed at this hotel for 2 nights, and received nothing but friendly welcoming service from all the staff. The rooms are a decent size, and have a homely cosy feel about them. The food was a mix of restaurant/gastro pub and delicious with a wide variety of choice on the menu. Whilst Luss is wonderful to wonder around and the Loch is a must, the beer garden at the hotel is a lovely place to kick back and enjoy a drink in whilst soaking up the Luss sun. Whilst clearly a very good destination hotel to go to in the Summer, I can see this being equally cosy and warming through the colder Scottish months. We hope to return to enjoy the beautiful grounds and Loch soon, and will certainly be rebooking into the Loch Lomond Arms Hotel.

We came across this hotel by accident. It is beautifully decorated and we had a lovely room however at a fairly High Price. Dinner was Good but served in very small Portions. Breakfast was on both mornings a Real disappointment: no fresh fruit, no Yoghurts left Not Even upon request ... When we Asked for it we were basically Turned Down in a quite unfriendly Manner. Although a Four star Hotel, there were no bathrobes in the room, the Safe was detached and could be Removed, the toileteries were more than Basic (no Soap, no bodymilk, no tissue...)....
This hotel Needs a Management who has an eye for the Details... And for the things that Want people to come back which Among Others is True friendliness!
