Visited this place whilst on a family trip to Scotland. A few of us had a craving for fish and chips after a long drive around the Scottish Highlands. We found ourselves in the small village of Killin where we happened upon this charming family run restaurant. We were welcomed in by the owner and sat down at a table where our order was not taken long after. The prices were fairly steep so we were expecting good things and were not disappointed. As mentioned in the title, I had the best fish and chips I have eaten in well over a decade at the Old Smiddy and my family agreed. My girlfriend who is a vegetarian ordered a pizza and was equally satisfied.

I highly recommend this little restaurant and urge you not to be put off by the prices because the food quality is excellent as are the portions.

We booked a table after reading reviews on here. Lovely little bistro type restaurant but advisable to book as it is popular. Lovely food at reasonable prices and the staff were very attentive too.

We dined here several times in October while staying in a nearby cottage. The welcome was so friendly and the food delicious every night. This is a small and very cosy restaurant and takeaway run by owners Lynn and Michael alongside their B&B business. The Smiddy is a lovely old building, tastefully and thoughtfully decorated. The log fire was welcome on the cold nights and the restaurant was kept spotlessly clean. The menu isn't the largest in the world but, what they do, they do extremely well. (It is a small village after all).
Every member of staff was just as friendly as the owners. We were treated like old friends and nothing was too much trouble. We sampled several items from their menu, half chicken &chips (the chicken must have been the size of a turkey - what a feed), steak pie & chips, fish & chips, pasta arriabata with pork meatballs, macaroni cheese, scampi & chips and ham & pineapple pizza. The chips are hand cut and salted and absolutely delicious. The selection of homemade puddings was impressive including favourites like sticky toffee pudding, apple betty and a good selection of icecreams. Prices are very reasonable.
The takeaway concentrates mainly on fish & chips and pizzas and the level of local custom is tribute to the high standard. A banner outside proclaims 'Voted the best fish and chips ever - as voted by Lynn's Mum' - we agree.
This restaurant is small and booking is recommended in the evening to avoid disappointment. This charming restaurant is deservedly no1 in the area.
The location is right next to the much photographed falls and handy for the village centre. There is a small car park at the side.
