“Jazz night visit”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 10, 2012

Enjoyed a relaxing evening with dinner listening to the local Jazz band. The Hotel was busy, but there seemed to be a shortage of staff on duty, which slowed down service at the bar where everything had to be ordered. An enjoyable experience though, with excellent music.

“OK”

This is at the very end of the road. The food was very average and the service was good. There weren't very many restauratns open (we ate early) so we were liminted in venues.

“Good pub food and sea views”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 13, 2012

Good choice of menu and a bustling feel so makes you realise it is a popular place. We both felt the portions for the evening meal were rather small and the bacon roll for breakfast was small for the price. Good service and a decent bottle of wine.

“Carbon-copy pub fare - variable quality”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 4, 2012

The Commodore is part of the Vintage Inn chain, so the standard menu will be very familiar with no great surprises. The pub itself is quite big, with an extensive dining area, and rather old fashioned decor and furnishing.

The quality of the food is a bit variable. My starter of calamari was rather greasy and obviously cooked from frozen. However, my rib-eye steak was very good - cooked to medium rare (as ordered), it was tender and full of flavour.

Of our other dishes, the fish pie didn't look all that appetising - the sauce looked a bit lumpy, the potato over-baked and the whole dish a bit colourless - but I was assured that the flavour was acceptable. The fish, in the fish & chips, was huge but looked a bit greasy.

Service was friendly, polite and efficient - no problems at all with the staff.

Prices were as you would expect from Vintage Inn, so not the cheapest but not extortionate. Overall, I would say it's ok if you choose the right thing, or if you go for a budget fixed price menu, but I couldn't recommend it.
