this building has quite a quirky character. Rather old fashioned and tired but nevertheless very comfortable. It's remote location guarantees gorgeous scenery, peaceful long walks and the occasional farm animal. The staff were lovely, food was nice and general atmosphere and ambience was brilliant!

Stayed overnight on a voucher deal.Beautiful views lovely area but let down with hotel. Maybe I was expecting too much. Staff very helpful but seem a little inexperienced. On arrival check in was smooth, Bar not open but was told it would be at 3pm. No TV in rooms I do feel that you should have the option to watch TV or not. Room a little tired, clean but tired. Bathroom nice and spotless. Dinner was ok, basic food nothing startling. The bar, well if you can call it that ,size of a cloakroom. Beers in fridge, no draft. One major issue was the fire alarm went off at 8am not once but 4 times. My husband is disabled so would be a major problem to evacuate quickly. Looked out the window to see a few guests outside I called to them to see what was happening and was told it was ok burnt toast!! At no point did anyone knock on door to inform guests of this. One guest asked reception to speak to a manager and was told no-one about. To conclude more bed and breakfast service very tired though to be fair improvements have commenced would I stay again.....No. Staff deserve a pat on the back.

the full story needs to be told to make you in full possession of the facts.

We had an overnight DBandB deal here on a Glasgow Great Deal and decided to take it based on the many 5 star reviews here on TA. Hmmmm....

As you arrive at the end of the long meandering drive you get your first expectant glimpse of The Gartmore. You will see that many previous guests concede that the building looks a little tired and in need of refurbishment. Understatement. The outside needs a small fortune spent to bring it up to a basic standard. To be fair the owners are working on upgrading the interiors first and this is looking good but first impressions lead to a drop jaw moment. You need to be up close to see the scale of the problems.

From many of the reviews this hotel obviously has great appeal for some but I could not find any of that. The internet email deals now on offer lead to a certain amount of expectation when you decide to buy and I think most who take advantage of this type of getaway offer have basic standards of amenities they require despite paying a budget price.

Let's be clear here. There is NO television in your bedroom. If TV forms part of your leisure time then you must sit in a communal room and hope the majority want to watch your channel choice.

There is ONE bar, the size of a phone booth selling tinned beer and the basic selection of spirits and soft drinks. It is located in the downstairs dining room and wont open till 3pm.

Once you have marveled at our scenic beauty in the pouring rain, in the middle of nowhere and the nearest town needs a taxi ride then the basics to me become more of a necessity than a luxury.

It is never a good sign when you are asked to make your dinner choice at check in and before you've even got your coat off! The menu promised more but the food was really pretty basic. Meals were ok and served by a hard pressed but pleasant staff who try to keep smiling through it all but there is no sign of any management structure evident throughout the hotel.

The lack of someone obviously in charge is compounded by the fire alarm ringing on the morning of departure and not one of the staff aware of procedures or tried to organize any kind of guest evacuation.

You pays your money and takes your chance and there is an obvious appeal for many. I wouldnt go back under any circumstances.

Would agree with other visitors, the building has seen better days, but, reception is a well restored and great first impression. Rooms were a bit on the small size (well ours was) but clean, adequate and recently redecorated.
Staff couldn't have been more pleasant or helpful.
All in all represents excellent value for money.
Oh and did I mention the views !

My daughter and I had 6 fantastic days at Gartmore House. The view from our room was stunning and we could see the Wallace Monument in Stirling in the distance. The snow fell and we would sit in one of the large lounges by a warming log fire. The whole time spent was so very relaxing, caring and helpful staff and excellent teaching for the painting and quilting classes. I would definitely return. Every where is kept very clean and although a bit of updating is in the planning, it in no way reduced the delight of staying at Gartmore.

A nice place to stay a warm atmosphere good food and a great location - we were a group of 27 on a cycling holiday and we loved it - the magnificent house has a tired look from outside but belive me it is a gem and an experience I hope we can repeat - I understand some of the rooms are small but we had a family room which was huge. The staff a mixture of scots and europeans were outstanding - we cycled the Tossachs and Lomond Lomond and had a fabulous time in an area rich in history -where ever we went there was a warm welcome and great food in the pubs and cafes in the surrounding villages and visitor centes - there are no tv,s in the rooms and the
(slow) free wi fi is only accessible from the reception area - a hidden gem with stunning views

I have stayed in Gartmore House many times, the last time was in September. The drive there is beautiful and is a foretaste of what is to come. It is a splendid house which can accomodate from one to four in the generous size bedrooms. It is fair to say that it is a little tired and would benefit from some investment but it is comfortable and warm with an open fire in the evenings. I organised a quilting retreat on a full board basis with coffees and home-baking in between meals. The food was wholesome and varied. Staff are attentive and courteous. You will not be disappointed with the views from many of the bedroom windows. You can see the Wallace Monument on a good day. There is a small bar open the evenings. We shall return in the Autumn.
