“MORE THAN ADEQUATE”
Reviewed March 15, 2014

Searched with some difficulty for a suitable hotel when meeting a group of German friends at Glengoyne Distillery - they were here for two nights in Glasgow but we wanted somewhere near the distillery. Finally settled for the Best Western Buchanan Arms in Drymen for DBB and was pleasantly surprised. Our large front room (one window to the side, two to the front) and huge double bed was impressive even if the furniture was a bit dated. Night time was noisy mainly because of our room position at the top of the creaky stairs and boisterous wedding guests. There was a wedding on in the hotel so the place was busy which added to the atmosphere. Pre-dinner drinks in the busy bar was 'entertaining' and our allowance of £20 each for dinner let us pick anything we wanted from the menu. The meal was very good, well presented, warm and tasty. Service was provided by a friendly staff who were chatty and helpful. Breakfast was buffet style, okay, but we would have preferred table service. I had to request a fried egg, only scrambled offered in the lukewarm buffet. The staff again were friendly and helpful. Reception arrival and leaving was also friendly and informative - all in all a more than adequate, enjoyable stay in a friendly hotel. We didn't sample the spa and I wonder what it would have been like if the hotel hadn't been so busy with wedding guests. £160 for the night DBB may be considered a wee bit expensive considering the meal allowance was only £20 - and a wee moan from my wife - the mirror in the room was not in the proper place for the hairdryer!! Well done to all the staff on a busy weekend.

Room Tip: Room 37 was fine.

Had a lovely overnight stay including bed beakfast and dinner. Three couples booked together and we were all given rooms together in 'the attic' , just three rooms up there so it suited us. Check in was speedy and reception staff let us know about spa facilities and dinner arrangements. The rooms were quite small but perfectly functional, everything you needed, tea/coffee making tray and toiletries provided. Spotlessly clean, the only gripe I had was the bedroom window didnt open, think it was stuck with paint. Might be a Health & Safety issue.

Had a drink at the bar and then went to use the pool and sauna. Again cannot find fault, immaculate with large fluffy white towels, staff very friendly and helpful. As part of the package we booked you could book a spa treatment for 1 person from each couple. My friend had a massage, I had a pedicure and my other friend had a manicure. Again lovely staff and would make use of these facilities should we return.

Can not understand the negative comments regarding the restaurant. The staff were welcoming and the service was fine. The food, now that is another story. 1st CLASS. Absolutely delicious and beautifully presented. Dont know when we last enjoyed a meal out so much. Whoever the chef is ,they need to double their salary to make sure they stay.

Breakfast is buffet style and has everything you could want. Cereals, fruit juices, pastries, fresh fruit and a good selection of hot food and as much tea and coffee as you can drink.

Overall we had an excellent stay, although too short. Would go back again for two nights to enjoy this lovely hotel and village. Keep up the good work

Firstly reading some of the reviews I am surprised that there were negative comments regarding the food. The meals we had were excellent and presented well with good service. Other guests we spoke to also praised the food quality. The room we had was very comfortable and warm, the lounge area was well kept and pleasant, perhaps the only downside was the seating in the bar was a bit basic but for what we paid for a two day break there is nothing really worth complaining about.
Definitely a hotel we would return to if visiting the area again.

I recently stayed at Buchanan Arms, under a Glasgow Great Deals offer. Check in was from 3.00pm. We arrived at 2.45pm and were basically told to sit and wait until 3.00pm before our room would be ready. At just after 3.00pm, the receptionist came into the lounge and announced that rooms were ready and there was a rush as several customers went to get their keys. Not a great first impression.

The room was well appointed; comfortable bed and chairs with a tea/coffee tray and decent bathroom.

We took a walk around the lovely village of Drymen and came back to use the hotel pool and sauna. Again, very pleasant.

We had booked dinner in the restaurant for 7.30pm. Dinner slots were allocated so that the restaurant could cope with service - or so I thought. Dinner was a disaster. We got the menus and then waited ages before we were even offered a glass of water. I had to go to the waitress twice (after twenty minutes) to ask if we were getting served. No-one in our area of the restaurant (about five tables) got any service during this time. When the starters came, they were delicious. Again, we had a twenty minute wait before our plates were finally cleared and again, I had to go and ask for our main course. I spoke personally with the restaurant manager, who was pleasant and apologetic.

I wrote a letter to the manager the next morning and left it in reception, highlighting our issues. I didn't even get the courtesy of a reply. Shame.

This is a nice hotel with lots of potential, but I lay the blame firmly at poor management. It needs a big investment in staff training, and a better allocation of staff in the restaurant.

Room Tip: Book your meal at one of the other restaurants in the village. Good for bed and breakfast, but perh...

We had a nice room, very clean and the staff were nice.
We didn't use the pool/leisure facilities,so cannot comment on that.
However, the food in the restaurant left a lot to be desired.
Evening meal.starter was passable.main was awful, dessert only passable.
The staff were very polite and welcoming, but 2 courses out of 3 went to the wrong table.
There seemed to be a lot of staff buzzing about, but what were they doing?
We were told there was a delay in the kitchen and we'd have to wait for our main, which we didn't mind at all......however,if we'd known how bad the main was going to be,we wouldn't have bothered waiting.
Sadly, the cooked breakfast was horrible.Didn't try the cereal/juices etc. so can't comment
Again,staff were nice,but food was a letdown.
Because of this,we wouldn't stay again.

I booked for one night through Best Western website and paid £58.50 for room only. I opted for the "superior" room because it boasted king size bed and as I was recovering from a recent operation wanted maximum comfort. Imagine my disappointment to then find it was simply two single beds linked together :-(
The ridge between the two beds made it impossible to sleep anywhere but on one side....I would have better just paying less for a standard double room. Add to that some rock hard pillows and I had the most uncomfortable sleep in any hotel...ever!
However on the plus side....the lounge area is lovely and comfy...staff really pleasant....food good....and I also enjoyed the jacuzzi and steam room.
Really think this hotel should not claim to have king size beds though as it's a factor that can really matter to some people...like it did to me.
