“Good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 21, 2013

Stayed here on 15th September. We got a very good deal through booking.com and were happy that what we paid was good value for money; however it is not worth the full rate!! It is a lovely old building, full of character and original features. The food was very good both in the bar for supper and the dining room for breakfast. The rooms are basic and could do with upgrading. The staff were very welcoming, friendly and helpful.

we landed in this hotel through a mini-cruise to Scotland with DFDS. It's a little hotel in a small village. At first glance it seemed quite ok, but the bathroom wasn't very clean and the beds are pretty awfull (at least in our room). Furthermore the bathroom door didn't close properly and the rooms are pretty noisy.

it's ok for a few nights (we stayed 2), but wouldn't recommend it for a longer stay. The staff is very friendly though, and the restaurant & food in the bar are excellent.

We have just returned from a 5 day break at the Winnock Hotel, we found the service to be first class. The waiters and bar staff were all friendly and pleasant. The food was of a good standard, and nothing was too much trouble for the staff. We would not hesitate to go back again.

We were given a Red Letter Day of Afternoon Tea for Two at the Winnock Hotel as a gift. What an absolute disaster this proved to be and a total waste of money. We were told to book in advance for this ‘treat’ which we duly did and arrived at the hotel really looking forward to the experience. The afternoon did not start well, the reception staff ignored us at first and when they finally noticed us waiting to be attended to, didn’t appear to have any idea what we were there for!

We were told we could sit in either the bar or lounge area and they would send a waiter over. When the waiter arrived, he also didn’t appear to have the least idea what a Red Letter Day of Afternoon Tea for Two consisted of. At no time were we asked by either the reception staff or the waiter for proof of our gift, which concerned us as we didn’t want to be presented with a bill at the end of the tea. We showed the waiter our letter just to be on the safe side but he still didn’t seem to have a clue.

When the tea arrived it comprised 4 tiny sandwiches (one each of cheese, cucumber, tuna and smoked salmon – we were never offered choices or asked if we had any particular dislikes), 2 tiny slices of tarte au citroen (which appeared shop bought), 2 little squares of what looked like sticky toffee pudding and 2 tiny scones (again, shop bought by the look of them). One of us had a pot of tea and the other was offered a single cup of coffee and that was it.

The cost of this ‘experience’ was £35, an outrageous amount to pay for such a very poor offering. This was most definitely not a Red Letter afternoon out.

I’ve waited until now to write this review in the hopes that the review I gave to Red Letter Day would be shown on their website – it hasn’t been, they obviously only allow good reviews to be featured with no criticisms shown. Doesn't reflect well on this company either unfortunately.

We were a party of eight, having a meal out because our two friends came over from the States.
Having seen a Taste of Scotland advertised we decided to have a meal here at the Winnock. Are we glad we did it was excellent, starters ranged from Salmon to Course Game Pate Mmmmm. Add Cullen Skink, then our main course Venison to Chicken wrapped in Haggis. Desserts well just go and try them, they taste better than they look. Friendly helpful staff finished of a rerr evening.

I stayed for one very long night for a murder mystery weekend. On arrival we were dealt with quickly and get keys for our room. The hotel is a bit of a warren with stairs everywhere. The murder mystery was rather cringe worthy, humour was rather old fashioned with a lot of the jokes being around a speech impediment. The rooms were dated and the bed was soft with springs sticking out. Breakfast was a nightmare, couldn't get service for love nor money. I waited over 45 mins to order food, just ridiculous! I would never go back.
