“VERY COSY BUT NEEDS A BIT OF TLC”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

Stayed here for 1 night early september on way to North Scotland. Found the hotel to be very rustic and cosy. The food we had was excellent and the staff were very cheery and curtious. The room we had was clean and tidy had all the things you require in a room for 1night The bathroom could have done with a lick of paint but for what we paid I was more than happy.

The only negative point I would make about this hotel would be that more time and effort needs to go into the general care of the facilities especially the dining room. We were sat next to a radiator and window and there were slug trails accross the carpet and cobwebs around the windows. This is just general care issues and with a bit of tlc the place could be first class.

But after saying all that, would I stay there again.............. yes

This hotel was assigned to us after another one (part of a Groupon deal) was fully booked for our chosen period of stay. The location is magnificant, about 3,5 hours drive from Newcastle, 2 hours from Edinburgh and less than an hour from Glasgow. The village of Drymen is surrounded by typical Scottish nature: green hills and nice lakes (Lochs). It's a perfect location to either visit the big cities or spend time in the nature and have long hikes and day trips.
The hotel itself is very cosy and Scottish and very clean. Breakfast was excellent, with a continental breakfast ready to take and warm breakfast (e.g. bacon and eggs) freshly cooked on request. The hotel bar featured (obviously) a lot of decent whiskeys and besides having a restaurant of itself there were also some restaurants located around the corner.
The room was large and had a good bathroom and tv with proper signal and the room was (very important) very neat. Why the 'Average' then? For starters the hotel was not really sound proof, which meant that when the guests in the next room would turn on their TV at 7.00 am we would be instantly awake (which I do not prefer during my holidays) and worst of all the beds looked nice but in reality they appeared to be spirals with a piece of cloth over it, so they were so tough and hard to lie down on that a wooden plank would have been a better option. Since sleeping is a large part of the activity one does at a hotel and this was the only part that was really not good at Winnock the rating is Average. If they would change the beds for a set of proper ones it would instantly be 'Good' instead of 'Average'.

I have just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel which I was very disappointed by. First there seemed to be no one in charge. Apart from the first night of check in no one seems to acknowledge you on entering or leaving the hotel. While the waiting staff were nice they lacked training which comes down to management or the lack of. I felt that Drymen did not want tourists as only the Drymen Inn was welcoming and I believe they are only opening about a year, well done and keep up the good work. I would definitely not be returning to the Winnock or recommending it to anyone. With regard to the area it is extremely beautiful and definitely worth seeing but stay somewhere else.

We are a young married couple and I felt it was too full of old folk. staff were very nice bar meal was big portioned and tasty. The breakfast was too greasy for me and my wife thought her scrambled egg was jelly like. That weekend we went was fully booked but wth no entertainment :( we paid £162 for the room and breakfast the room was very clean but it could of done with better soaps not just a single dispenser on the wall with same soap for bath shower and sink. we were interested in the haunted side of it for me I wasn't scared, one area gave me a small shiver, upstairs in the old part but my wife was up all night saying did u hear that!!! What's that noise there it is again then the toilet door suddenly closed over faster than normal for the rest of the night I had no covers as she stole them to hide under lol wimp!!! Out of 10 I give it a 6/10 would I go again only for a ghost hunting night.

Room Tip: If you smoke get a balcony

Stayed two nights for the boy's wedding at near-by Ross Priory.

Drymen is an absolutely lovely wee village. The Hotel itself looks great. Staff are informal and friendly, the room was fine, all room facilities up to scratch.

It was a bit pricy - £99 for two B&B on the Friday, £139 on the Saturday, for what came across as (just) a good 3-star. But then we don't normally book at the height of the holiday season, and at quite short notice, so fair enough.

Me and the Mrs usually agree on how good the places we stay are. On this occasion we differ wildly on the food - I thought it was awful, particularly the breakfast, which was close to inedible. Quite an achievement to make smoked salmon soggy (is that even possible?), and for scrambled eggs to taste like cardboard. She thought it was lovely, and praised the full breakfast. The overall 4-star rating will allow you to understand who wears the trousers....

Could I offer one thought just as friendly advice? Eating in the (very nice) bar, you are supposed to go to the bar to order. But we didn't know that, and sat feeling like right idiots waiting for one of the several busy waiting staff to actually acknowledge us, let alone take an order. Not hard to put a one-liner on the menu to explain the arrangements (which are fine), or for the staff to say "hi, this is how it works".

Impossible to sleep until 1am due to live band playing until then right below us. OK by us, cos we'd just returned from a venue where exactly the same thing was happening for non-wedding guests at the boy's wedding. Not really in a position to complain! Others may have been though.....

Overall, fit for purpose. But not on our personal return list.

i was at this hotel on the 24th august with my mother at the murder mystery night. we had been attempting to book this since last oct but it kept being cancel. when we arrived at hotel there was no lift being disabled and having to go up two flights of stairs then down another flight to get to room 83 was not ideal. the room was ok but very tired walls needing a paint. wardrobe was broke and tv broke. we did phone to ask for tv to be fixed but they never came. the beds were a joke they were hard lumpy and we were unable to sleep in them. moving onto the murder mystery the actors were fantastic and it was good fun however the room we were in was so cramped my dinner plate had to hang off the table. we were sat at a table of 6 so we had to share with strangers. when we asked for a table for two they said no although most people that were there as a two had there own table. this made us very uncomfortable especialy as we had to sit there from 7:30pm to 11:30pm. moving onto breakfast things went from bad to worse the room was split into two sides of tables of eight so we had to share tables again. the right side of room was for the tour and left side for murder mystery. we had to clean our own table as people who had sat there first there plates were all left. and no staff cleaned the tabke for our full breakfast. there was no fresh cutlary or cups. there was only two girls doing the breakfast. the toast was on the table for the full time before we sat down so it was cold and previous guests will have touched it. it was a bufet breakfast which was cold. there was a choice of sausage egg tomatoe haggis and bacon. i asked if they had potatoe scone they said no however the right side of the room got table service with hot plates and a choice of eggs and potatoe scone. they also had a menu and we did not. we paid £178.00 for one night and we would defo not return not worth the money.
