My wife was attending the Nick Nairn Cook School and I wanted to find a little out of the way place to make a weekend of it without the kids. Of course, I needed to find somewhere with good food to fit the theme of the trip and came across Monachyle Mhor.

Quite simply, Monachyle Mhor (via the owner and Chef Tom Lewis) serves some of the best food you'll find anywhere.

We stayed in a Luxury room in the courtyard part of the hotel (the hotel has 14 rooms in total), which had all the space, decor and facilities you would expect of a modern boutique hotel.

Finally, all the staff were friendly, courteous and efficient and helped to make our stay truly memorable.

Stayed one night here with my girlfriend and will definitely come again. Difficult to fault the overall experience. The room was luxurious and the good was fantastic.

We were recommended this hotel by a novelist friend who knows a thing or two about being comfortable and tends to the fussy.

It is a complete gem. The location is stunning, a paradigm of rural Scottish scenery, and the house is very pretty (despite its rather sugary pink wash exterior). The internal decor is smart and designer-modern, with some nice touches (lovely Occitane in the bathroom; Axxor taps). The views (at least from room 4) are breathtaking, and the quiet at night is like being wrapped in black velvet. The only downside is the linen, which we found a little coarse (real linen, but the raw type).

The service was wonderful, and the criticisms on this site in the past on that point seem to have been taken on board (or were just wrong). The staff were friendly, willing to please, pretty quick on their feet and very committed. Nothing was too much trouble. We had a particular problem with our rental car , which the girls at Front Desk spent hours sorting out for us (successfully).

But it is the food which marks the place out. This is Scottish cuisine at its very best. From the homemade, feathery moist scones on arrival at tea, through the haddock poached in butter for breakfast, to wonderful scallops, halibut, and venison, and sublime puds, Tom Lewis is a master. The emphasis is on excellence of produce and technique, rather than fancy combinations and foam. This is cooking with passion and flair with a rare lightness of touch.

Thank you Jera and Judy.

This is definitely my best experience in the UK until now : I was very impressed by the care for details in every thing.

This is also the only place in Scotland where the food deserved the rating published: We had two dinners at Monachyle More and were charmed by the quality of ingredients, the creativity of the food and the precision of cooking. The chef can compare himself with the best international cooks, without shame!

The room (number four, first floor) was spacious, modern and bright. The service was excellent: we were offered a welcome tea; had our lunches packed for our walks along the Loch and we enjoyed the precious advices of the South African Sommelier a lot.

Although this hotel is quite expensive in international comparison …but this appears to be the case everywhere in Scotland; I would definitely recommend the place as a high quality romantic place, for nature loving Epicurians.

A wonderful two nights in a high quality haven in a stunning setting. Excellent staff and some sublime cooking by Tom Lewis and his crew, All courses were superb and the sticky toffee souffle magnificant. Will return as soon as possible as promised to take Midnight the dog for a walk. I cannot understand how any review of this place could find anything to criticise!

Having enjoyed our first stay, my wife and I recently stayed here overnight on our way to the Isle of Skye, and very nice it was too. Lovely room (in the courtyard), friendly service, and excellent food, and all in an outstanding location. We would recommend this Hotel to anyone. It's pricey, but in our experience it's worth it.
