“Lovely”
Reviewed March 22, 2013

Stayed for the first time at the Chandlers Hotel, Rothesay and was pleasantly surprised as did not think their website did them justice...we were in The Kennedy room on the top floor which had lovely views across the River Clyde...the room was quite quirky but very comfortable as was the bed...lovely crisp white sheets and big fluffy pillows...food was excellent and there were lots of books, board games and a piano to keep you entertained...owners very friendly and make you very welcome...would recommend and definatey go back.

Room Tip: The Kennedy Room for the view..

Having booked a 2 night stay and then looking at the reviews (especially the negative ones!) we were quite confused as to how the reviews could be so different.
What i will say is the negative comments are extremely far fetched and a lot of rubbish!

We arrived at the hotel and were quickly and efficiently checked in. We were on the top floor (Hamilton) which was a lovely room with a fantastic sea-view.
A bottle of bubbly was brought up to our room in an ice bucket shortly after arriving which was great :-)
On our first evening we dined in the restaraunt - delicious food and peaceful surroundings. Just what we hoped for!
Breakfast was lovely, we were always served by friendly, helpful staff wanting to do everything for you and ensure you were happy.
On the second night of our stay we ventured into Rothsey for some birthday celebrations. The room key also had a front door key. It was nice to know we could return when we liked.
In the foyer and at the reception there were binoculars which allowed us to enjoy the surroundings & view even more!
The hotel was clean, peaceful and all round just a joy to stay in.

We had a wonderful stay and will deffinately return to Chandlers!

For Valentines i decided to book a deal through Itison to stay at Chandlers hotel as Bute holds some lovely memories for my girlfriend and I and it did not disappoint. We were greeted by the host and he was extremely helpful. He gave us our complimentary bottle of champagne and checked us in and we felt very welcome.
That night after a long day we decided to stay in the hotel and were treated to an amazing meal with great atmosphere and friendly surroundings. The next night we decided to go into Rothesay and to be honest wished we had stayed in the hotel for a meal again as nothing really compared. On our departure the host, again was very helpful and cheery and left us feeling very happy with our stay. We will definitely come back to Bute and will stay at Chandlers again for sure. The hotel being so good made our weekend superb and i cannot thank them enough.
Anyone travelling to Bute must check if they can stay at Chandlers, you will not be disappointed.

Room was great - huge with nice decor and a lovely ensuite. We were in the Kennedy room with a brilliant sea view (especially good since we had lovely weather the whole time so it was nice to look out). The only bad point is that the bed in this particular room was a very creaky metal frame. It didn't really affect our sleep but it would likely bother other people.

Breakfast was excellent (and went until 9.30am which was nice, we're not fans of being down for breakfast at 8.30 when we're on holiday!) There was some juices and cereals and some choice of fruit. We also had a cooked breakfast - there were a few options but we just went for the full scottish. It was all very nice with good quality black pudding and it was a big plate of food, we were going hill walking so it really set us up for the day.

We didn't eat dinner in the hotel but chose to go into Rothesay instead. We were worried about the distance from town at first - we don't have a car so wouldn't usually stay so far out but the bus service was very handy. The bus only comes by once an hour but stops right outside the hotel so it was very convenient. We also walked into town and back a couple of times - it took us about 35 mins and it's flat and with a pavement the whole way so it's an easy walk. Also Andrew the owner was very pleasant and chatty and was able to give us any info we needed about the buses or taxi prices and where we could go a walk to.

To sum up: We'd definitely stay again - the room was great, the cooked breakfast was excellent and the warm welcome and service was very much appreciated.

Stayed at Chandlers after buying a 'Groupon' deal. Had I not received my regular 'Groupon' email, we would never have discovered this lovely little hotel. We decided to upgrade to a sea view room - why come to an island and not look at the water! We were given a quaint 'attic' room with dorma window and en-suite bathroom. Nice little room - only criticism I would make is that the carpet was heavily stained perhaps with people dribbling tea etc. If a fresh carpet is not on the cards, perhaps a strategically placed rug might improve the 'look'. Apart from that, the room was comfortable, clean and adequate.

The real highlight of the weekend was the food. We enjoyed fabulous meals on both nights and started each day with a freshly cooked hearty breakfast. No 'cook chill' meals in this establishment: everything is cooked fresh and to order. . Excellent for me as I have food intolerances. Moreover, it was served piping hot on warm plates, which we like. The owner was convivial and helpful and we felt very well looked after. We were also given a tray of coffee and a newspaper to take out onto the terrace after breakfast to enjoy the beautiful view. Even though it's only March, we were lucky enough to enjoy a mild sunny morning.

We were also impressed by the installation of a chair lift to the first floor and felt that this was a rather unique selling point for more elderly guests or people with mobility problems.

This really is a lovely hotel, quietly situated on a beautiful bay on route to Mount Stewart. We found it a comfortable base to explore the island and really enjoyed our stay. We will certainly return in the warmer months to visit Mount Stewart and the Victorian Fernery which are close by.

Would certainly recommend this hotel if you like Victorian architecture, beautiful views and quality food.

Room Tip: Choose a sea view room

Just got home after a two day "Groupon" break to this hotel. We were in the Frazer room which might be one of the smallest in the hotel. The view is admittedly fairly un-inspiring......BUT....and its a fairly important but....its what we ordered. We were offered the opportunity to upgrade to a larger room at the front with a scenic view but declined. The room was comfortable and clean which is what was important to us.
When we checked in, Andrew was very pleasant and having checked our voucher, produced our free bottle of "bubbly" which to be honest, I had forgotten all about so that was a nice surprise.
We decided to stay in the hotel on the first night so ate and drank there. The food was excellent and the house wines that we chose ( there is a choice of house wines) were very nice indeed.
Breakfast is from 08.00 to 09.30 officially but seemed to be approached with a flexable attitude.I would like to make a wee observation on this point.A young couple came into the dinning room just around the cut-off time, looked around and probably feeling a bit unsure of themselves, walked back out. Andrew came out of the kitchen just as they left. He completed the service he was already performing, then went after them and having reassured them, brought them back in to have their breakfast. No fuss made...but I thought it worth mentioning as I think it illustrates the quiet, subtle and probably unsung care that guests are given.
The hotel is about 2 miles from Rothsay town so you have to bear the location in mind if that is important to you.
All said and done, we enjoyed our couple of days at Chandlers and would definately go back if / when we visit Bute again.
